Fresh off the back of a string of high-profile releases on labels like Nuusic and RAM Recordings’ ProgRAM imprint, international drum and bass trio Sola make their Druid Recordings debut with the defiant two-tracker “All About You” / “Nightmare”. Comprising of Manchester beatmakers Nothing To Lose and Echidna – locally renowned as the co-founders of Grand Theft Audio – and Brisbane producer Hanm, the emerging production trio have already proven themselves to be spectacularly versatile, turning their hand to everything from jungle to liquid. Fittingly, this new release showcases two more styles of D&B they’ve perfected: pared-back steppers and hectic neurofunk.

In equal parts sparse and intense, “All About You” sets thunderous, gravelly basslines against a bed of twinkling synths, echoing impacts and delicate, percussive clicks to produce one of the team’s most forward-thinking collaborative efforts to date, its delay-soaked vocal refrain making it all the more memorable. The ensuing weapon, “Nightmare”, is the polar opposite of its sprawling precursor: greeting the listener with theatrical strikes and cinematic melodies, the epic track soon reaches a clanking crescendo, its frenetic drum patterns adding to the song’s urgency. The song’s roaring synths take on a metallic quality, the hard-hitting wall of sound expertly juxtaposing the song’s more atmospheric passages in true neuro fashion. 

“All About You” / “Nightmare” drops exclusively via Beatport on 27 October, landing on streaming services and other digital stores on 10 November.

Smeerlapp, a 30-year-old musician and producer from the vibrant city of Hannover, Germany, is a true connoisseur of music's transformative magic. His deep connection with music ignited at the age of 10 when the rhythmic beats of drumsticks first resonated with him, inspired by none other than his own father, a drummer. It was this early influence that set the stage for a lifelong devotion to the art of music.
By the age of 14, he was already strumming the strings of his guitar, adding a new dimension to his musical expression. This rich foundation led him to explore a myriad of musical genres and styles, ultimately defining his distinctive sound and career.
At 20, Smeerlapp embarked on a journey that would see him fall in love with the electrifying genre of Drum & Bass, dedicating a decade to mastering the intricate crafts of music production and DJing. His unwavering commitment to this genre has yielded a unique, captivating sound that seamlessly marries the warm, timeless tones of soulful music with the cutting-edge techniques of modern production. Smeerlapp's musical journey was complemented by an extensive education. He pursued a degree in music technology, culminating in a coveted Bachelor of Arts. This comprehensive knowledge enhances his understanding of sound's intricacies and dynamics. With this expertise in hand, he ventured into the world of teaching, becoming a self-employed tutor for aspiring musicians seeking to master production techniques and guitar skills. For six years, Smeerlapp has been sharing his knowledge, empowering others to unlock their creativity and find their own unique musical voices.
In addition to his work as a musician, producer, and educator, Smeerlapp has been a mixing and mastering engineer for the past five years. With an impressive portfolio of over 200+ releases under his belt, he has fine-tuned and polished the works of numerous artists, helping them realize their sonic visions.
From the early stages of his production journey, Smeerlapp delved into the harder side of Drum & Bass, a subgenre known as neuro funk. His exploration led to his first releases on prestigious labels such as Hanzom Music and Ram Records, setting the stage for a promising career in the electronic music world.
However, there's more to Smeerlapp's musical journey than meets the eye. From the age of 19, he has been an integral part of the metal music scene, shredding his guitar in a dynamic and passionate metal band. This experience adds another layer to his already diverse and rich musical background.
Notably, Smeerlapp's father, whose influence sparked his musical journey, continues to be a central figure in his life. They still play together in the same metal band, sharing their love for music and creating powerful, dynamic rhythms as a family.
Smeerlapp's versatility goes even further. In the background, he effortlessly crafts music in genres like Hip Hop and Urban music. While working primarily for other artists, this demonstrates his ability to transcend boundaries and adapt to various musical landscapes.
