Coming From The South Radio 142

Borrowed Eyes is the second act of a musical partnership that began almost 30 years ago as teenagers in a short-lived cover band. The two founders, Brian McElhany and Scott Smith reconnected in 2021, and after realizing there was still a huge set of musical commonalities, the two began collaborating on an original project drawing influence from the Mod and Ambient rock movements in the 80s, relying more on textures and melody over soloing. Brian has been developing the music and recording guitars and synths, while Scott is creating the lyrics and playing drums.

After realizing that they had something fresh, they set out to find the other pieces of the puzzle. The first to fall into place was bassist, James Travis Rhodes, who Scott plays with in roots rock band, Gheni. Rhodes brings a diverse set of influences from classic rock to Dave Matthews, to Rush and funk, and took the music that was being created up a few notches. With James in place, Brian and Scott sought to find a singer with the sound they had been looking for. They found that voice in Thomas Penninger, a singer-songwriter based in Austria.

The result of the collaboration has been two songs so far, with a full album being recorded currently. Brave Life and How Far Can it Go will mark the first releases from the group.
