“On a distant exoplanet, a once-thriving civilization had been decimated by storms and environmental chaos. Their advanced society, rich in music, dance and traditions was lost to time, leaving only remnants of their culture scattered across the landscape.

Centuries later, a nomadic species arrived on the planet, seeking signs of life outside of their home. As they explored the barren ruins, they stumbled upon an ancient building which appeared to be a former gathering space.

Among the debris, they discovered a battered electronic device, its surface etched with a strange symbol and worn by the elements and time.

Curious, they activated the device, and frequencies filled the air with haunting melodies and rhythmic patterns. The sounds echoed through the building, reverberating and pulsating in the space. They had never encountered anything quite like it. This music, a remnant of the past, seemed to convey stories of joy, struggle, and connection.”

DJ Hockey approaches techno by intermingling layers of contrasting elements. Defining characteristics for his selections are grounded, thick, encompassing atmospheres. Psychedelia is present in all of his musical expressions, crafting dynamic journeys resulting in playful and groovy sets.

With releases on labels Fixed Rhythms, PPRZ, Modelfuture and RF Records, DJ Hockey is propelling his interpretation of techno with his productions; most recently with his debut vinyl release titled Push:Pull on Fixed Rhythms.

DJ Hockey started PPRZ Records and mix series with Adam 2 with the intention to showcase techno from the PNW and beyond, with a cheeky nod to queer culture in underground dance music.

Like many people, Associate began his musical education at a young age, but his DJ education came later, flipping through the dusty bins of his hometown Detroit record shops. After years as a record collector, he threw himself wholeheartedly into DJing in 2010 after moving to Washington DC. Over a decade later, he’s still a firm believer in crate-digging and the fine art of playing the right tune at the right time.

With access to so much fantastic music, Associate finds little reason to restrain himself to one genre. Inspired by his favorite DJs, Patrick Russell and Theo Parrish, he lives in the sweet spot between house and techno, with a detailed ear toward sound and selection.

His skill and collection are what keep people booking him from radio shows to major underground events. Stylistically, he eschews genres stating his only criterion is music meant to be heard. With Midnight FM he plays a dark, acidic brand of dance music opting for a diverse selection in tribute to Detroit radio hosts. As Associate and Midwest Plenty, he seeks to move hips and ears via the friendly confines of Eaton Radio or via the warehouse where he was a crucial member of the erstwhile group, Sequence.

In 2025, Associate and Midwest Plenty will begin another year of hosting one off events in the DMV. Only when agents, venues, and mood strike in a certain way will the Associate put on his coveralls and give the effort the invited legends deserve. As a DJ, he merely wants to present what the crowd needs as a component of a great dance party. If a great dance party is what you want, frankly, he is your man.

Samhain XXIV at Tangent, Oct 26 in Detroit. Erika did a captivating under 120 bpm techno set to launch the night, Wata Igarashi was on directly after me, with Mike Servito following Wata and ultimately Scott Zacharias closing the 12 hour party. In the other room the Luv NRG Soundsystem raged as T4T did their thing. 

For this set I took the approach that at this time of year, in the Halloween time period, that feelings morph and change, how we feel about music on these nights is different, the context is altered. What is stern, scary, and stark can be very exciting at this time. What is warm and funky also takes a new shape and can be oh so freaky. I felt an impeding doom in the air and I wanted to channel that into solid sound system experience that was transformative and immersive. A sonic description of another world, the true power of techno. I am extremely excited about the shifting of eras happening within techno right now, and there was so much fresh music that fit the No Way Back concepts, but within a more pure techno language. I was also thinking of Mike Huckaby, who I worked with in the Record Time Dance Room, and his theories that a few amount of sounds makes a record the most powerful. There’s so many thrilling jams with only 4 sounds right now, this set gave me a special chance to explore that. 

Technically I used 4 CDJ-3000s and a Pioneer V10 and its internal effects with lots of layering with a new approach to mixing. If I’m doing something historic, it has to fit perfectly within the sonic context of what I’m playing, and for an older cut that can be very hard with today’s sonics, so I spend time remastering the older songs through my mixer and outboard equipment to give them a way to be played and allow them to glow within this new and living context. It’s all experimental at this point, a work in progress. The ones called QM are an older “quick master” technique that I did with software. Enjoy this journey to the other side.
