Edward and Hidden Persuaders - Losing Track Of Time

(Part 1/2)
Now, more than ever there’s a need for soothing sounds to help you calm your busy mind, ease you in your day or transition from day to night. Do a quick google search and you’ll find 8 hour ambient video’s on youtube with the most generic background sounds that don’t do the genre any justice. This mix is an attempt to curate quality ambient into a cohesive 8 hour wash of sound. The drone like frequencies are hypnotic in ways that can make you feel like you’re in an altered state of consciousness. It can either be unobtrusive background music or a highly emotional experience, depending on how you listen. These 8 hours can get you through a rough day, zoning out and focusing on your work by creating a masking effect, reducing the difference between background noise and more distracting sounds. Or play it quietly while falling asleep to the comforting drone (put a speaker under your bed) hopefully transitioning to a different feel on every sleep cycle. Whatever you do, it’s basically one third of your day sorted.

As with all past ‘Reflection’ year-end mixes, I start with a collection of albums I have enjoyed over the year. Through the process of compiling a mix that flows well, songs are whittled down and selected from this collection. This means many of my favorite tracks and albums are often omitted in the process, due to the need for them to fit in a mix that comes together as organically as possible. As I say every year, this isn’t a definitive ‘best-of’ list, but a selection of some of my favorite music from the year in one easily listenable format. It’s the most enjoyable way for me to boil down music I’ve loved from the year using these self-imposed restrictions, for you to then enjoy and discover more. ASIP - Reflection on 2020

Roost is a song written in the depths of winter, on the sort of day when the birds gather early in the black trees and you feel a great longing to also be home – in its truest sense. 

When it came to producing the song, my first multitrack recording, I wanted to keep the arrangement simple, honouring its honest lyrics, but also conjure up the brooding atmosphere of that winter’s day. 

I chose to add just two elements alongside my vocals: the rich, slightly discordant sound of my old harmonium – and the cacophonous calls of a group of rooks.*

The endlessly absorbing editing process itself felt like the final part of the journey for Roost, as I crafted the birdsong so that the rooks really sing alongside me and help to tell the story.
