heaven and earth:
neither exists apart from
snow fluttering down

ひらひらと雪
そしてなんにもない
天と地と

it was snowing this morning 
everything white everywhere smile
nowhere sounds

Kajiwara Hashin was born in 1864 and studied under Kyoshi. Although Hashin is not very well-known as a poet, this particular haiku that he wrote is quite popular worldwide: it was first translated by Miyamori Asataro and later by R. H. Blyth.
