Ali Ajel A singer/Songwriter and an album. The story of a diaspora told in seven songs. A colourful blend of Eastern and Western sounds and textures, from Arabic folk music to the unmistakeable beats of Western pop. This organic mix of instrumentation and lyrics from two very different cultures is harmonised with the melancholy sound of the Oud, enchanting melodies and desert percussion.

Ali Ajel was born in Iraq and grew up during the upheavals of war. While his interests lay in poetry and songs, family expectations pushed him towards the study of medicine. Increasing violence in Iraq and fears for his safety led him to flee the country. The UK welcomed him as a refugee and he started to practise as a doctor. But his dreams of making music and a growing need to tell his story through music led to him to study at the Institute  of Contemporary Music Performance.

Ali’s spirited songs reflect his struggle to reconcile different, often conflicting aspects of his life. Themes of traditional Iraqi life, loss, displacement and the vibrant culture of London, all shape his words and music in songs which overcome cultural barriers to embrace all forms of diversity. 

“I am inspired to create unity through the language and harmony of music. Bringing East and West together not only lets me express myself artistically but allows me to integrate my own deep personal connections between the two cultures. I want my songs to spread the message that cultural integration and diversity are essential in the modern world and to inspire people to discover their own individuality. We need to go beyond social barriers and follow our passions especially today when our countries and our world are so divided and in conflict.”

The talents of Ali Ajel are beginning to be noticed, thanks to support from Monte Carlo Doualiya Radio and appearances on the BBC  Radio London and National Iraqi TV. A series of live appearances in London is scheduled, beginning with an intimate live performance from his home, which will be streamed on Facebook on Monday 18 June, 7pm. “I want to open my door to everyone so we can connect, celebrate life and our cultural differences through the universal language of music.
