The Liverpool-based artist has amassed a fine understanding of a wide array of scenes, styles and sounds from drum & bass to electro-funk, disco to house and techno – underpinned by a love of breakbeat. The music under his alias ASOK is an amalgamation of this diversity that has found favor with labels like M>O>S, Lobster Theremin, Crème Organization, and Mistress Recordings.

Following 2019’s ‘New Atlantis’ LP under his experimental techno alias @Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann’s ‘Monophonie’ is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia.

The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation – alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. ‘Monophonie’ recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music.

Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to paired-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch’s custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia’s sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness.

‘Monophonie’ was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany’s premier neue musik collectives Ensemble @Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz’s original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.

Legendary Detroit artist Optic Nerve debuts on @Soma.

Soma proudly present a label debut from one of electronic music’s most influential figures, Keith Tucker aka Optic Nerve. With a detailed discography on some of Techno & Electro’s most well respected labels, stretching back to the 80s & 90s either via solo projects or as part of genre defining group AUX 88, Tucker has been at the forefront of the Detroit scene since his beginnings. Considered by many to be the blueprint for modern day Techno/Electro, Tucker is one of the scene’s most hard working artists devoting almost 30 years to his career as an electronic artist.

Appearing on Soma sub label, Avoidant, at the end of 2020 as DJ K-1, the opportunity to continue working together with his Optic Nerve pseudonym arose. Resulting in Soma’s 600th release, the Far Away EP. Combined with Scottish based artist Kyle Irvine’s unique Sci-Fi based artwork, Tucker has delivered a unique and modern day outlook on his famed Detroit Techno/Electro sound.

Title track Far Away is a classic take on the seminal Detroit sound. Distant and drifting vocals glide across sweeping textures and tripped out synth sequences, glued together by deep emotive strings. Channel Z captures the classic Optic Nerve sound perfectly; pure machine funk soaked in harmonic atmospheres. The ominous Techno Programming has a darker, edgier tone to the previous tracks but by no means less emotive. A funked up, warped baseline sets the tone backed by jacked up drums as the track exudes pure attitude. Fellow Detroit based artist Strand drops a remix of Techno Programming to close out the EP. Their version leans on more melancholic elements but retains the feel and demeanour of the original.
