In 2020, Mell G dropped out of law studies to pursue music full-time and hasn't looked back since. For good reason too—she's far too busy for any potential regret. Over the past three years, the Hamburg-based artist launched JUICY GANG RECORDS, switched up her DJing style from ghettotech to electro, began touring and started producing. Her year-and-a-half old label is now a go-to source for brazen, bouncy club bangers and her refocused, electro-heavy sound has led to bookings alongside DJ Stingray, Pearson Sound and other heavy-hitters.

The rising star is certainly having a moment, yet it hasn't been all smooth sailing. These sudden career ascents can be tricky to navigate emotionally and her upcoming debut album ISSUES expresses some of the mental health struggles she's faced along the way.

Her RA Podcast is similarly personal. Moving from retro synthwave to acid-laced techno to UK bass before ending on funky electro, it embodies the core sounds that are near and dear to her. Loaded with lots of gritty low-end frequencies, it's a thrilling ride across contemporary club music that cements her status as an in-demand DJ.

Next up in the Fast Forward Audio Series, we present: Ryan James Ford

During the 1990’s while growing up in western Canada, Ryan James Ford was introduced to electronic music through the local rave and club scene. He began to discover, study, and collect the music he heard at these parties which consisted of a mix of Jungle, UK hardcore, Techno,House, IDM, and ambient.
Fast forward many years later to Berlin, where Ryan and his productions found a solid home on the legendary Clone records from Rotterdam and has other production’s on Anetha’s Mama Told Ya, Ida’s SÄVY, Marcel Dettmann’s MDR, Answer Code Request’s ACR, Dream Ticket, and his own label SHUT. PLUR is the new record label from Ryan James Ford. The inaugural release 'Ripping EP' begins a new path of club focused tracks from himself and other like-minded contemporaries. PLUR will act as a tool to discover new energy on modern dance floors.

Ryan’s sets and productions are rich with inspiration from his time spent living in Calgary where he had interests not only in electronic music but also in hip hop, post rock, reggae, jazz, experimental, and even some interest in metal. He began experimenting with production in the early 2000’s but it wasn’t until 2013, with a move to Berlin, that he started investigating his musical capabilities seriously.
Even though two decades have passed since Ryan’s introduction to electronic music, his love for early Warp, Metalheads, Metroplex, Novamute, Skam, Downwards, etc. can still be heard resoundingly clear in the strength and versatility of his productions and sets. The future will see Ford continue to play out and release on labels that share his like-minded affiliation and roots in the electronic music community.

Breaking through via a series of livestreams in 2020, DJ MELL G has had quite the journey. From launching her label JUICY GANG RECORDS in 2021 to embarking on a worldwide tour in more recent months, the German producer is establishing a sound and space of her own. Today, DJ MELL G produces and mixes electro with occasional splashes of techno and breakbeat. Having co-produced records with DJ GODFATHER, DJ FUCKOFF, and KARNAGE KILLS, her first solo LP ISSUES signifies her most personal project yet, affirming her status as a considered producer who is keen to nurture dialogue around mental health in the music industry.

"When I first heard electro, I had an epiphany." The Georgian artist and Herrensauna resident talks about the genre she loves most, preparing for sets and remaining authentic to her sound.

SALOME, now one of the scene's foremost purveyors of electro, has shot up in popularity over the last two years. Hailing from Tbilisi, she now lives in Berlin and is a resident of Herrensauna, where she's become a champion of the fast-paced dance music that the group tours worldwide. She's also graced the lineups of festivals like Pitch, Wire, and Dekmantel - where this talk was recorded live - and has released searing electro on labels like Lobster Theremin, Mechatronica, International Chrome, Darknet and more.

In this interview moderated by Souhayla Ou-Oumar, SALOME talks about first falling in love with electronic music after a visit to Kyiv. She says she heard every local artist playing electro and breakbeats instead of techno, and she hasn't turned back since.

The artist plays multiple gigs each weekend, and she talks about the process behind her preparation. She spends hours each week digging for music in multiple genres, creating what she calls "sound maps" for each of the territories she DJs in. This can be tricky, SALOME says, especially when she appears in places like Italy and Spain that expect to hear techno. But no matter where she's booked, she says she makes it a goal to remain true to her sound. Listen to the episode in full.
