Techno sets

A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

It is a great pleasure to host a rare DJ mix by the brilliant Boston 168! 

Along a surface, within the empty silence of an abandoned setting, the factory noises still echo: in the beginning was the production line, then the working class of the consumer society, lastly machines and robotics as workforce. So in those factory cities, in Michigan as in UK and in the Italian Motown Turin, the industrial plants have been occupied by the rave subcultures, the mechanical noise replaced by the sound of techno. 
Now the plants have become sound venues, and getting involved with techno can be seen as a search for a meaning for the kids who grew up in that industrial setting. In Turin, industrial and musical manufacturing city, Boston 168 is born, formed by Sergio Pace and Vincenzo Ferramosca, an analogic duo that through sound production aims to redefine a peculiar field of the electronic sound, Acid Techno.

Kicking off full speed comes an hour of untrammelled techno from Belgian artist Phara. The Fuse Brussels resident has racked up quite a following with his club focused sound, both via slick releases as much as behind decks spinning vinyl-only sets. Post-punk, wave, EBM, electro, Detroit and Berlin provide the context for a curious talent that has published warped melodies on blue chip labels like Soma, SK Eleven, Stockholm LTD and Planet Rhythm. His off kilter earmark is available too via his ‘gimmick-free’ record label Phaaar, a more immediate and personal vessel for his own experiments in sound. And it’s not all off the shelf, 2022 saw him take his Korg EMX-1 onstage for a debut live performance that presents yet another side to his many-layered craft, and a new alias titled In Glass promises to reimagine both house and dubbier references. With bated breath comes this next instalment, powerful beats from the get go, tracks with striking forward momentum interwoven with atomic precision and a primary feeling for ambiance that doesn’t miss a trick. Phara taps a wealth of experience and knowledge of records for Bassiani Podcast 222, shadowy frequencies and volative basslines, everything you love about techno brought together by this prolific and multifaceted artist.

Olivia Mendez is a vinyl-only DJ, selector, and curator whose sets weave deep, minimalistic techno. Her sound is rooted in rhythm—shaped by her early years as a percussionist and dancer, and refined through a deep immersion in London’s underground scene between 2006 and 2011.

A passionate digger with a background in music journalism and event curation, Olivia approaches her sets as narrative journeys—sonorous, layered, and emotionally resonant. From Brooklyn to Kiev, she’s queered consciousness through sound, creating dancefloors that pulse with tension, release, and intent.

She is the founder of KONVENT, a FLINTA collective dedicated to reshaping feminist discourse through site-specific music and art interventions, and launched her own label, Dust in Grooves. Alongside Chami, she co-runs DIG Curated, a cross-disciplinary platform spotlighting underground sound, visual art, and community-driven projects.

Now based in Berlin, Olivia continues to explore the intersections of activism, art, and sound—smashing the patriarchy, one beat at a time.
