José Antonio Torresola Ruiz conocido artísticamente como Frankie Ruíz (Paterson, Nueva Jersey, 10 de marzo de 1958 - Nueva York, 9 de agosto de 1998) fue un cantante salsero puertorriqueño conocido en el ambiente artístico como "El papá de la salsa"

En algunos textos se podría encontrar que su verdadero nombre haya sido José Antonio Ruiz Negrón, puesto que creció con los apellidos de sus abuelos, Emilio Ruiz y Concepción Negrón, dos puertorriqueños que lo firmaron cuando su mamá Hilda Estrella, con tan solo 14 años, lo tuvo con un señor llamado Francisco Torresola, que abandonó a Frankie al Nacer.

Desde su niñez empieza a cantar salsa y demuestra un talento precoz que lo ayuda a entrar en una relación con músicos profesionales. Empieza cantando en escena local a los siete años y graba a los 13 años su primer disco en 1971 a lado de Charlie López y la Orquesta Nueva. En 1974, Frankie Ruiz se va para Puerto Rico con su madre y se instala en Mayagüez donde va a cantar con los grupos La Dictadora y La Moderna Vibración.

Es en Puerto Rico donde Frankie Ruiz consolida su carrera musical integrando en 1977 la orquesta La Solución donde se encuentra como cantante colíder con solo 19 años. Hace dos discos Frankie Ruiz y La Solución editado en 1979, que salió de nuevo en 1996 con el título Salsa Buena; el segundo Orquesta Solución vuelve a ser un éxito imponiendo dos temas como La Vecina y sobre todo La Rueda.

Con Tommy Olivencia entra como cantante de su prestigiosa orquesta grabando la canción Fantasía de un Carpintero en el disco Un Triángulo de Triunfo (1981). En 1983, Olivencia publica el LP titulado "Tommy Olivencia" del cual se desprenden los éxitos "Como Una estrella", "No que no" y el megahit "Cómo Lo Hacen" de la autoría del reconocido cantante y compositor boricua Raúl Marrero. Lanza en 1984 Celebrando Otro Aniversario siendo la canción que más pegó Lo Dudo, que es hasta hoy considerado como un disco mayor de la salsa erótica.

En 1985 se vuelve solista y graba para el sello TH (Top Hits) su primer disco Solista Pero No Solo este disco acaba en los mejores lugares de los hits puertorriqueños y latinoamericanos con varias canciones y gana el título del mejor disco en los Latin Music Awards de Billboard en 1986 y es uno de los discos latinos más vendidos en los años 1980. En 1987 confirma su ascenso con el disco Voy Pa' Encima, del que se venden 300 000 ejemplares en los Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico, hasta cruzar el Atlántico para sonar en España con el mundialmente conocido Desnúdate Mujer. La revista americana Billboard lo elige artista del año 1987 en la categoría Tropical/Salsa.

En junio de 1989 tuvo problemas judiciales al ser arrestado por posesión de crack, por lo que fue enviado cinco años a la cárcel. A pesar de estar en prisión, se venden 200 000 copias de su disco En Vivo y a Todo Color, donde fue un hit la canción Si te entregas a mí. Más Grande Que Nunca apareció en 1989, en 1992 sale a la venta el disco Mi Libertad y en 1993 Puerto Rico Soy Tuyo. En 1995 sale a la venta Mirándote, el disco Tranquilo le sucede en 1996 y le ofrecen un premio en los Latin Music Awards de Billboard de 1997.

Su última aparición fue en un concierto en el Madison Square Garden el 11 de julio de 1998. El 9 de agosto de 1998, acabado por las drogas y el alcohol a los que fue adicto desde su juventud, fallece en un hospital de Nueva Jersey a los cuarenta años de edad a consecuencia de cirrosis hepática.
