Night On The Sea

The Tabula Smaragdina (stressed tábula smarágdina, Latin for "emerald tablet") is a text traditionally attributed to Hermes Trismegistos, which forms the philosophical basis of Hermeticism and is considered the foundational text of alchemy.

The Tabula is one of the most famous texts of alchemical and hermetic literature. The twelve or so dark, allegorical sentences reflect the idea of a interrelation between the microcosm and the macrocosm. That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, an eternal miracle of the One.

The oldest extant version of the text is found in the appendix to a 6th century Arabic manuscript. Translated into Latin in the 12th century, the Tabula was commented on and received by many alchemists in the Middle Ages and increasingly in the Renaissance period. Even after the emergence of modern natural sciences, its fascination, at least for occultists and esotericists, remained unbroken until the present day.
