Boulderhead debuts on Rhythm Section International with his most expansive EP to date: “ I Need Space to Dance”

The Bristol based producer, known for his intricately crafted, up tempo club records has long been a favourite at RS HQ and has, over the years, garnered much respect from a plethora of influential DJs. His most recent hit “ Bread, Butter, Noodles, Spice”, was a festival earworm and one of the most played underground tracks of 2023.

Existing in the sweet spot between tech-house, prog, broken beat and minimal techno - this EP sees Boulderhead widen his sonic palette with a collection of songs that showcase his versatility.

We are treated to contemplative, deep dubby moments (“Adapting”), glistening rollers ( “Saucy Hive Mind”) right through to the 146pm psychedelic tour-de-force of “ Sense Hyper”.

Boulderhead - real name Henry James, doubles down on his trademark shuffly ‘spoken word - tech’ recipe with soon-to-be club favourite “I Need Space” featuring frequent collaborator Overnite Oates, who over the course of 6 minutes, demands space - to dance!

“Dance and Dance Again” expands on this format with more chopped vocals increasing the bounce per ounce.

Equally appealing to the Ricardo Villalobos contingent as it will be to those delving into the history of progressive house and the golden days of minimal techno - we think there’s a bit of something for everyone here.

Despite the many different bases the EP touches on - the sound pallette and production are unified and coherent. Henry is at the top of his game, and much like contemporary artists like Adam Pits, Priori and Russell EL Butler - his style screams ALBUM!

023 - Bradley Zero - Recorded live from fabric

Releasing now for well over a decade - Neue Grafik: known to friends as Fred, has successfully transplanted from Parisian rookie to one- man London Institution. Beginning as a solo producer and DJ, Fred spread his wings upon relocating to South London - at first with his Neue Grafik Ensemble and later with his now iconic twice-weekly Orii Jam - the latter of which has given agency to an entire new generation of musicians; spawning an aesthetic, nurturing a unique sound and becoming a launchpad for countless artists.

Dalston Tape Volume 1 is Fred’s attempt to fall back in love with beatmaking - taking it back to the roots of where the project began. I say “attempt” because he’s simply learnt too much and made too many friends along the way to make a mere DIY beat tape. Since his early MPC-led productions on Parisian label, Beat X Changers, Fred has learnt to play the keys to a concert hall standard, he has become proficient in double bass and built up a dense network of collaborators who he has composed, recorded, engineered and produced for both at home in SE London and in the iconic Total Refreshment Centre Studios in Dalston.

This experience adds unavoidable dimensions to his toolbox - resulting in something more akin to a miniature-magnum-opus than a simple beat-tape. Yes, we hear the influences of Pete Rock, Mad Lib, J Dilla and Al Dobson Jr but we also hear the musicality of D’Aneglo, James Blake and live contributions from an ever growing army of young graduates of the Orii School.

Beats are finely crafted, virtuosically finished and at times - excruciatingly short! So short it’s almost a flex - but a humble one at that. If this is what Neue Grafik can do on his lunch break imagine what he could do with enough time and budget!?

The “ Volume 1” suffix reassures us more is to come, and the “tapes” suggests that whilst these may be brief sketches , there’s nothing throw away about them - on the contrary, we’re witnessing an artist in full flow, moving solo as nimbly as he does with an orchestra, a man with too many ideas and not enough time offering us a brief glimpse into his musical world and reminding us that despite all he has learnt he is, at his core - a beat maker.

The only question which remains is whether he is intentionally teasing us with these bite size nuggets or inadvertently elevating the art-form to new heights. That, is for you to decide...

Z Lovecraft - Motif MX I Theme [MOTIF MX SAMPLE PACK VOL. 1]

Private Joy?! With a namesake derived from the mighty Prince’s catalogue, and its lustful connotations, Private Joy is the producer of soul band Lovescene and a supreme vocalist of the Manchester scene. With collaborations working with the likes of Ruf Dug, Finn, and Lenzman, a solo EP was inevitable and a statement this is.

Pops Roberts’ first solo EP debuts on Rhythm Section INTL bringing together influences from Streetsoul, 80s ‘babymaker’ RnB records and a slice of 00s soulful house in there for good measure. In just over 18 minutes, Private Joy welcomes you into her world of sensuality and soulful warmth. Musical hugs galore, the production balances synths, harps, saxophones, tight beats and meaningful lyrical content; eschewing millennial whoops for Sade indebted dulcet tones.

Each track draws from personal experience; be it heartbreak or reconnection, an emotional diary conveying the trials and tribulations of love, loss and ultimately, desire.

Opening with ‘Eyes on You’, reeling you in slowly with a Joe Sample style intro, Pops’ undoubtedly sultry voice hits the hairs on the back of your neck, underpinned by 5 stringed bass guitar which features across the EP, giving every track deep harmonic roots. ‘Love Find A Way’ conjures the best of Osunlade’s discography, combining harp from Ada Francis, percussive loops, smooth strings, finishing the A side on soulful house tip.

The B side kicks off with ‘Playful’, a downbeat soul jam with an “swaying afrobeats influence”, to reflect Private Joy’s intention: “ An ode to appreciating the enjoyment of a friendship that is drenched in attraction that needs to be respected and taken slowly”. “Pure Love” jumps straight in with that elusive streetsoul vibe, when you hear it, you just know the volume needs to increase. Fellow Mancunian Meduulla jumps on the mic for the final verse, ironing in the tribute to the late 90s ‘upfront’ underground RnB sound made timeless by artists such as Zhané, Mary J Blige and Brandy. Closing the EP is title track ‘Desire!’, a modern ballad featuring Ophelia Buxton backing the layered vocals with trumpet licks. Jazzy rhodes and synth pad swells fill the void behind the natural yet electronic drums, a tapestry of passion led by Anita Baker chic vocals.

RS063: Private Joy - Desire! [EP Preview]

Gallegos is a name that’s been on many people's lips over the past few years.
Based in Bristol but with an ever expanding global reach - he has been nurturing his unique take on dance music, gaining legions of fans along the way with releases on Holding Hands, Banoffee Pies, Semi Delicious and Permanent Vacation plus regular slots at Panorama Bar.

Gallegos, first name Oliver - deals in feelings rather than genres. The productions on his debut effort for RS INTL channel a 90’s rave euphoria. Luscious pads swirl amidst pitched down jungle drums, celestial strings and philosophical vocal snippets that evoke ecstatic joy.


It’s no mean feat to induce a feeling of elation without the means of a synthetic intervention - but Ollie seems to have cracked the code - taking us there with harmony, texture and rhythm alone - nothing synthetic here: this is alchemy at play…

The EP - which in all honesty feels more like a mini album - is a real journey across 5 songs and 29 minutes. It’s about equally split between driving rhythmic compositions created with movement in mind, and pensive ambient detours that are more sonic meditations than anything else. The album reaches its most dizzying heights when these two elements come together in unison for the title track, “Memories You’ve Memorised'' - a widely road-tested future classic which blends scattered Juno chords, arpeggiated church organ and 80s vocal samples to a tear-jerking crescendo.

Memories You’ve Memorised elevates Oliver Gallegos to the top tier of modern electronic composition. There’s comparisons to be made to Primal Scream, Underworld and even Aphex Twin - but after all is said and done, we’re witnessing the coming of age of a future pioneer.

Rhythm Section International, the impossible-to-define label founded in South East London by Bradley Zero in 2014 has reached the ripe old age of 10 years. Funny thing is, it feels like it could have been almost double that. It’s hard to imagine the Landscape of the London music scene without this foundational force whose influence is felt more than ever.

With this special anniversary release, the label takes stock at this milestone to present a compilation in 3 parts: PAST, RE-IMAGINED AND FUTURE: honouring the labels tradition of always paying homage to what has come before while setting sights firmly forwards.

With 100-odd releases in their extended back catalogue covering every imaginable style and boasting influence in every inhabited continent on earth, it’s been quite a decade for the independent label, which began on a shoestring budget with funds made via the now legendary Rhythm Section pool hall parties in Peckham.

From humble beginnings to an era defining output - few would have predicted the slow and steady rise of the imprint and the impact it has had on generations of Dj’s, musicians and listeners - at home and abroad.

Spanning 6 discs and 30 tracks, the compilation begins by taking us on a walk down memory lane and presenting one track from each year of the labels output - highlighting some forgotten classics from the archives over the first 2 discs.

For discs 3 & 4, the label invited it’s stable of artists to pick a track from the back catalogue to re-imagine in their own style. This process resulted in some incredibly playful contributions from the likes of Ruf Dug, Session Victim and Private Joy - whose playful reinterpretations add new depth to old material.

Finally, the last 2 discs are entirely new material for 2024, carrying the torch of the previous SHOUTS compilations - whose sole aim is to shine light on new music from emerging artists. Stand outs include new work by RONI, Gayance, douniah & Dhanya as well as a cheeky contribution from old label mate Jordan Rakei under his Frank Liin alias. As ever, moods range from peak time dancefloor energy (Bamao Yende & Low Jack) to slow Sunday morning incantations (Cousin Kula), further showcasing the breadth of the label and it’s knack to eschew classification whilst still connecting it’s releases through an indefinable musical thread.

Rhythm Section is for everyone, Rhythm Section speaks to the post-tribal musical generation. Rhythm Section is alternative, soulful and above all, heartfelt.

The EP sees joint international release from Peckham, London label Rhythm Section International who released the instant classic debut of Al Dobson Jr, and were nominated for label of the year at Gilles Peterson's 2015 worldwide awards, as well as purveyors of southern hemisphere groove-driven underground pop Plastic World (GL, Savoir).

It will be accompanied by three conceptually related yet geographically disparate videos, filmed between Sydney, Melbourne and London.

Retiree - Gundagai

Following their second album ‘Vitamin D’, Cousin Kula have been taking their show on the road from Berlin to India. Now, featuring tracks crafted during the ‘Vitamin D’ sessions but existing on the more downtempo spectrum, their new EP is aptly titled ‘After Sun’. If Vitamin D was the soundtrack to a sun-drenched summer, ‘After Sun’ feels like the hazy evening that follows.

Cousin Kula - Aftersun [EP Preview]

The name dreamcastmoe is somewhat synonymous with the Peckham based Rhythm Section INTL label. Despite this being their first collaboration committed to wax, the journey goes way back…from debut London shows in Peckham to adventures across multiple continents, the DC-London nexus is alive and well and this recording is a testament to that bond!

RS INTL founder, Bradley Zero, first caught wind of what was going on in DC via the godfathers of the current scene - Beautiful Swimmers. As much figureheads as they are mentors in the DMV - Andrew and Ari - aka 'the swimmers', put Bradley onto the dreamcast sound during their early visits to Peckham to play at the now legendary pool hall.

Interest was piqued and Liquid Deep (PPU, 2017) made a huge impact, quickly followed by Floral Place and then Outer Space/Up 2 U, which dropped on Future Times in 2018, cementing the newcomer as one to watch and putting him on the radar of the finest tastemakers around the world.

With a sound equally indebted to hip hop, house, hazy electronics and DC’s very own ‘go-go’ sound - dreamcastmoe, born Davon Bryant-Mason  burst onto the scene with a refreshing mix of styles matched with an irresistible personality. The biggest smile in any room, Davon has the rare ability to quietly command your attention, whether on stage or in person, and his rise and rise is an organic one, built on connection and camaraderie.

Dreamcastmoe found a home on the iconic midwestern label Ghostly International, but for old times sake we decided to come good on an idea borne out of mutual appreciation and a long standing friendship. Rhythm Section INTL is proud to announce that we’ll be joining forces for the next series in the iconic mixtape series: The Lost Tape Vol 3. Thanks must also go to Sam Valenti IV and the Ghostly/ Spectral family for being so gracious and understanding and allowing us the space to bring this project to life.

Manchester’s finest soulstress, Private Joy, returns to Rhythm Section INTL with ‘Pure Love Remixed’ a follow up to the widely acclaimed debut EP “Desire”. 4 different versions, taking alternate directions from the same source, With Private Joy the guiding vision behind the record, her broad influences are on full display here: from electro to drum and bass to dub, label mates and close collaborators all throw their ante in the project.

Frequent collaborator Lenzman, the prestigious drum and bass producer, and consistently incredible remixer, lends his production quality with a scorchingly tight remix. It’s exactly what you expect from a trusted pair of hands. Surefire BANGER! In his own words: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Private Joy on a number of projects for the last few years now and the talent is ridiculous!”.

Fellow Mancunian and Rhythm Section INTL affiliate Hidden Spheres, takes the Afrika Bambaataa vibe and merges it with upfront street soul energy, maintaining the Meduulla rap verse.

For the final 2 remixes, versatile reggae producer Mali-I joins forces with Jamaican-bred, Manchester-born vocal extraordinaire Fox: flipping the original into a late 70s reggae version + dub, with live drums and bass, tape delay and spring reverb - channelling U-Roy meets King Tubby.

Rhythm Section is proud to welcome emerging London based Producer, Serenda to the label with an arresting sophomore EP: “Second Skin”
Serenda's  productions draw from the canon of Black electronic music with fearless intuition-always deep, always moving, always unpredictable: executed with a deft emotional fluidity.

Second Skin is a shape-shifting sonic world where flesh, identity, and memory blur into something entirely new.  The EP wasn't written as an overt statement about duality or identity-but in retrospect, that's exactly what it revealed.

Revelling in the twisted, chaotic percussion associated with greats such as Maurice Fulton and Joe Clausell, Serenda’s music balances light and dark, organic and mechanical, tension and release.

The dualities of her approach are evident throughout the EP but despite all these opposites, a great sense of balance is found. Influences are worn proudly on her sleeve but conventions are confidently thrown out of the window. Serenda is an artist who refuses to fit into a box.

" I enjoy playing with the tension between seduction and defiance. I wanted to make music that feels like flesh under club lights-real, sweating, mutating."

 “Part Seven” teases us with a soft Larry Heard-esque Juno pad before it disintegrates into deconstructed-club era sound design and growling baselines reminiscent of Malin Genie at his most experimental. 

The second single “Ms. Nightstress” has us floating in a primordial soup of frenetic drums and cascading doom chords. It’s a heads-down-big-room techno curveball. Just when we think we know where it’s taking us, in come the saxophones and the R&B vocals - invoking Carl Craig at his most demented.

"People expect me to be one thing," she says,
“…but I never am. And that tension-that refusal to fit-is where l find my power."  

Each track moves with a different skin peeling away - guttural club rhythms, tender off-kilter grooves, distorted percussion and haunting motifs. Together, they form a body: shedding, sweating, mutating. It's music for the dancefloor-but also for liminal spaces, for becoming.

"I realised afterwards that the EP sounds so diverse because I am so diverse," Serenda says. "These different sounds, moods, and textures-they're all parts of me. I don't fit into one category, and maybe that's the point. I'm the common thread. I'm all of it…am dual."

This record  packs so much punch for a 4 track EP. It’s a major statement from a singular artist.
 It's music for bodies in flux; for those finding power in their own contradictions. 

“Second Skin is the beginning of the mythos," Serenda explains. "It's a premonition. A shedding-but also an arrival."

Having already released internationally on labels such as ClekClekBoom (Paris), Hot Haus (London) and Amadeus (Montreal), the duo’s approach to production has matured immeasurably in the last year, as is evident in the restrained potency and poetic subtlety on the 4 tracks across this accomplished EP, Midnight in Peckham. 
Taking it’s title from the locale the boys have come to know as home, the record channels a delicate late night energy - equally indebted to the hypnotic incantations of Ron Trent as it is to the hazy suburban atmospheres of Burial. These 4 classic cuts pay homage to deep house in it’s truest sense - at once sublime, melancholy and meditative . Rhythm Section look to Poland once more for two of the most uplifting tracks of the year. This first track from their upcoming album recounts a day when Tori was walking along the beach and dozens of dead birds had washed up on the sand. “Apparently this was the time when Mutton Birds pass Sydney on their annual 10,000km migration. They’re increasingly dying at sea and washing up on the beach because of overfishing, marine pollution and changing weather conditions. This song is a reflection on how that made me feel, on my lifestyle and human impact on the environment.”

“LOVE IS” marks the long awaited return of Prequel to Rhythm Section INTL. The track, a joint effort with long term collaborator Cazeaux O.S.L.O. is a rumination of what love is and what love is not. Grounded by a gentle samba beat and ethereal guitar licks, “Love Is” sets the tone for the forthcoming album - an abstract cinematic journey through this most enduring of emotions.
Like his much lauded single “Saints”, this piece operates as much as Poetry as it does music.
