Rhythm Section is proud to welcome emerging London based Producer, Serenda to the label with an arresting sophomore EP: “Second Skin”
Serenda's  productions draw from the canon of Black electronic music with fearless intuition-always deep, always moving, always unpredictable: executed with a deft emotional fluidity.

Second Skin is a shape-shifting sonic world where flesh, identity, and memory blur into something entirely new.  The EP wasn't written as an overt statement about duality or identity-but in retrospect, that's exactly what it revealed.

Revelling in the twisted, chaotic percussion associated with greats such as Maurice Fulton and Joe Clausell, Serenda’s music balances light and dark, organic and mechanical, tension and release.

The dualities of her approach are evident throughout the EP but despite all these opposites, a great sense of balance is found. Influences are worn proudly on her sleeve but conventions are confidently thrown out of the window. Serenda is an artist who refuses to fit into a box.

" I enjoy playing with the tension between seduction and defiance. I wanted to make music that feels like flesh under club lights-real, sweating, mutating."

 “Part Seven” teases us with a soft Larry Heard-esque Juno pad before it disintegrates into deconstructed-club era sound design and growling baselines reminiscent of Malin Genie at his most experimental. 

The second single “Ms. Nightstress” has us floating in a primordial soup of frenetic drums and cascading doom chords. It’s a heads-down-big-room techno curveball. Just when we think we know where it’s taking us, in come the saxophones and the R&B vocals - invoking Carl Craig at his most demented.

"People expect me to be one thing," she says,
“…but I never am. And that tension-that refusal to fit-is where l find my power."  

Each track moves with a different skin peeling away - guttural club rhythms, tender off-kilter grooves, distorted percussion and haunting motifs. Together, they form a body: shedding, sweating, mutating. It's music for the dancefloor-but also for liminal spaces, for becoming.

"I realised afterwards that the EP sounds so diverse because I am so diverse," Serenda says. "These different sounds, moods, and textures-they're all parts of me. I don't fit into one category, and maybe that's the point. I'm the common thread. I'm all of it…am dual."

This record  packs so much punch for a 4 track EP. It’s a major statement from a singular artist.
 It's music for bodies in flux; for those finding power in their own contradictions. 

“Second Skin is the beginning of the mythos," Serenda explains. "It's a premonition. A shedding-but also an arrival."

Serenda - Second Skin [RS073 EP Preview]

Pacific Coliseum is the dancefloor focussed project of Jamison Isaak - A Canadian musician from British Columbia known primarily for his work as “Teen Daze”. In 2023 he won the award for Best Electronic Album at the Juno (Canadian Grammy) awards.
No stranger to South East London - Jamison has released on seminal labels from this neck of the woods, notably Church and Coastal Haze, with his last release landing on the legendary NYC Label, headed up by Jacques Renault: Let’s Play House.

‘Dreaming In Paradise’ marks another chapter in the well documented love affair between Beautiful B.C & SE London and wastes absolutely 0 time in making a statement of intent on opening track “Yeah”. Bounding out of the gates with a confident, almost braggadocious swagger, the composition struts into Balearic territory with steel pan refrains and dreamy, trance-adjacent synth pads. As the title of the ep would suggest - the sound of this track could veer into early 90’s italian dream house territory was it not for the obnoxious, yet perfectly balanced glissando bassline that glues the whole thing together. It’s an instant earworm and guaranteed bum wobbler.

Breath Dance is a deeper affair that simmers with slowly increasing intensity, promising a release but never quite delivering it. This one is a real tease of a track: perfect for longer, slow-build sets where it’s as much about what you don’t do as it is what you do do.

Club Memory is Pacific Coliseum in flowstate. An effortlessly infectious groove, staying true to the principles of deep house with that added west coast bounce. For Fans of Moodymann, Rick Wade, Mike Huckaby & Shinedoe - this one just grooves

The EP is rounded off by the title track “ Dreaming in Paradise” which merges the elements of the previous 3 tracks together in unison. Held down by a jarringly mellow organ bassline, the dreamy synths wash over the swung house groove, slowly giving way to a gated melody as we descend deeper and deeper into this most comfortable of wormholes.

RSDIGI001 - Pacific Coliseum - Dreaming In Paradise [EP PREVIEW]


Whilst the name Tom Esselle may be new to many - for those in the know, Tom has been a pivotal figure in the South East London scene for over 15 years. Tom broke onto the scene as part of the formative Wholemeal collective, booking floating points in 2009 in a 200 cap basement club and hosting regular events for the next decade whose lineups read like a who’s who of the London underground scene.

Tom made his indelible mark on the subculture of Peckham when he opened YAM records with brother in arms Theodor. If you’ve ever been to a Rhythm Section NYE dance, you’ve seen these two play back to back for the midnight countdown. It has become a tradition- and for good reason. These two DJ’s and collectors at the very peak of their powers opened a record store which, along with the Local Radio platform Balami - gave a space to the nascent scene emerging at that time. The bricks and mortar provided a foundation for many key talents to flourish - not least Chaos in the CBD - whose early releases on YAM alongside those on Rhythm Section INTL were crucial to their early successes. Factor in the now classic album from Brit award Winning Ezra Collective Keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones and Maxwell Owin “idiom” , Romal Kultaan ( of Lemon Lounge infamy and you have something of a local hit factory.
‘ Employee of the month’ Beans ( chaos in the cbd) was taken under the wing of the Yam founder in the early days and the pair have since formed a special bond. With Beans having conquered the globe with his aforementioned project, he honourably returned the favour - helping Tom refine his production with engineering tips and Studio time. It sounds like Tom might have reached his 10,000 hours: it’s now his time to shine.

Tom makes the kind of house music I wish I could make myself. It’s rooted in organic grooves, latin percussion and warm synths. Textures hover around bold basslines that do exactly what they are intended to do. The music is precise but groovy, it’s arresting but never obnoxious. It’s confident, it’s direct - not too brash but nor is it selling itself short or just sitting in the groove. The songs evolve, mutate, swell and contract- all in the name of maximum dancefloor destruction.

If you like Classy, forward thinking house music with one foot in the golden era of tech house and another in contemporary soulful compositions then this EP is for you.

Tom Esselle - Evolutions & Revolutions RS069 [EP Preview]

Japanese sensation Mayurashka has arrived on Rhythm Section International !
We’ve long been fans of her hypnotic incantations that playfully subvert house and techno tropes to create wonderfully weird music that moves you.

Known for her delicate, subtly psychedelic approach to production - all subtlety is thrown out of the window on the opener, “Parents and God”. We are immediately confronted with a slamming Chicago house style beat in style of Mr Fingers at his most utilitarian. It slams, jerking in and out of tempo like Ron Hardy in beast mode.
Out of nowhere a soulful church organ arrives - at first for a brief respite - but then for an extended solo, which gives way to an 80s electro style breakdown before reverting back to form. It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does - to a dizzying extent - and heirin lies Mayurashka’s magic: a blatant disregard for norms and a deft touch that makes the unorthodox so compelling.

“Notango" takes another big left turn - sitting somewhere between tribal seance and rain dance, it’s mostly organic drums and otherworldly sound effects that combine to drag us deeper into the wormhole before “ Vat Murmur” takes us back into the light with its uptempo disco energy and giving way to heavy chugging bass. This one is equally for fans of idjut boys and Larry Levan.

The Ep rounds off with the title track “ LSI dreaming” - to try and describe it is almost impossible, but let’s say it starts of with a mid 2000s Perlon-era tech house energy before things quickly escalate beyond all recognition and then just hover with lysergic intensity. If I ever closed panorama bar, this is the track I’d end with.

After 2 outings on recent SHOUTS compilations, Asa Tate lands on Rhythm Section Intl proper with a timeless EP - “ Replica”.
Asa Tate, fka Tech Support has been on a bit of a tear recently and this record feels like a real step up: a statement of intention aimed directly at the peak time dance floor.

A student of the Weatherall school of DJing, Asa Tate has showcased an astonishingly mature approach to production over the years that belies his age. You’d be forgiven for thinking these 4 tracks had been discovered from a dusty DAT tape, locked away in the vaults of a northern Italian club and rediscovered after 30 years….Listen more closely and you’ll notice the contemporary production flair and more recent influences that make this EP a perfect reinterpretation of the mid 90s house sound: sitting somewhere between dream house and Morales finest work under the red zone moniker.

The EP wastes no time in setting it’s intentions with the A1 Title Track, “Replica” - after a brief and floaty progressive house intro the refrain “ E-e-e-e-e-e-e-ECSTASY” echoes loudly over sampled vocals, euphorias piano chords, throbbing lead synths and a bouncy tech house bass line. It straddles so many sub genres of house without feeling derivative of any of them. Cliche’s and classic samples are embraced playfully and serve to contextualise and elevate the influences. This is not just really great house music or excellent storytelling, it’s art history.

“89” is a sultry deep house cut featuring rising Spanish star, Dariam Coco on Vocals. It floats like a butterfly, but stings like a bee, as the soft chords are interrupted with huge drum fills deftly transforming an after party jam to a peak time moment.

We continue to “ Unknowns” - a masterclass in building tension and holding it - this track simmers with restrained intensity for almost 6 minutes. It’s trademark Asa Tate production at its most understated and classy.

We round of the EP with the fittingly titled “Last Dance”, a wistful composition that brings us back down to earth slowly, safely and gently; always grooving but never pushing - this one is the soundtrack to the end of a long summer day and reaffirms Asa Tate’s claim to be a modern master of Deep House.

We’re super excited to give Ned the platform he deserves and look forward to hearing this one soundtrack many a dance as this long, beautiful summer draws to a close

Chaos in the CBD - Trust is Key

Two jewels in the crown of the soulful electronic music scene in NYC unite for a spellbinding EP on Rhythm Section International. ”Full Circle” is a brand new body of work from Musclecars & Toribio.
To call this 12” simply epic would almost be doing it a disservice. The breadth of musicality and execution of ideas contained across three compositions is nothing short of miraculous.
I use the word composition intentionally: these are not merely tracks - these are three movements making up a concerto - with a dub thrown in for good measure!

The record kicks off with a soulful house behemoth, “ That’s My Story” featuring NJ legend Roland Clark on vocals giving sweet, sweet testimony. In many ways, this track feels like a coming together of the trio’s influences. The lyrics contextualise it, giving it this intimate, confessional feel. The Latin drums shuffling amidst the 909 kick drive it forward and the organ swimming freely amongst it all takes us to church. It’s a timeless track - paying homage to the various New York traditions laid down by Louis Vega, Timmy Regisford, Joaquin Claussell , Ron Trent et al - all heroes and collaborators of the composers who - with this effort - have surely now earned their place in the pantheon of American Soul Music.

‘Be Honest’ maintains the confessional tone with the lyrics but takes things right back down in terms of tempo. Is it a love song, an ultimatum or a cry for help? Whichever way you interpret it, this track is Toribio’s time to shine as a lead vocalist and he hits all the notes, leaving not a dry eye in the house. This is a delicate tour de force, delivered with such raw emotion and vulnerability it allows the instrumentation to take a back seat - just a gentle groove, swelling strings and some unresolved chords are all that’s required to transform us into the main character of this story. We’re left hanging, and it’s oh so relatable.

Agua De Florida serves as an uplifting, fast-paced finale to the concerto, and this one’s all about the trumpet. If Herb Alpert were making house music, I imagine this is what it would sound like. Throbbing bass and noodling synths join the melee and crank the joy up to 11. If the EP is a story arc over three tracks, then we’re definitely not left hanging with this one. All is resolved, things are moving onwards and upwards, and the circle is complete.

Scottish force of nature La La lands on Rhythm Section INTL with her first EP for the London imprint: “council”.
Having cut her teeth as a resident of iconic Scottish institutions FLY Edinburgh and Sub Club Glasgow for years, La La - real name Lauren Andrew - emerged onto the international scene at the tail end of the 2010’s. Forged by the fire of the unbeatable Scottish scene that gave rise to Jackmaster, Ewan McVicar, Optimo and Dennis Sulta, La La used the downtime afforded in the pandemic to hone her craft as a producer, dialling in her songwriting and honing her production techniques to find her own sound.
The time burrowed away in the studio paid off, crystallising in this razor-sharp EP, sitting in the sweet spot between Hard Groove & Peak Time Techno.
Over 4 tracks we are treated to a masterclass in driving, percussive club music: from the playful tension in“ against them” to the relentless drive of “nod to letting go” the tracks are peppered with playful breakdowns reminiscent of Ricardo Villalobos at his most groovy. Title track “council” takes a solid house groove, a thunderous 909 kick and goes to town. It’s utilitarian, confident and powerful in its execution: it’s grade A 100% pure dance floor weaponry.
The Final track, touch me is a real mix of contemporary club sounds: a layered 1 bar loop that wouldn’t feel out of place on the latest Leod release is paired with pitched down vocals evocative of post dubstep. Just when we think we’ve figured it out, deep house synth stabs, piano chords and sexy vocals join the melee in a way that could sound cacophonous but instead sits together at perfect counterpoint. La La has proven to have an almighty knack for balancing disparate elements and influences into a harmonious whole and it’s clear to anyone who listens that she’s found her voice and is having fun with it.

Have Isaac Carter & Callum Asa made the most tasteful tech house EP of recent memory? The short answer is yes….
Isaac and Callum, known for their respective club nights: OCHI and Planet People have been quietly chipping away at the coalface of underground dance music for quite some time now.
Isaac - perhaps known more widely as a regular at Circoloco & Phonox has shared bills with the likes of Moodyman, DJ Bone, Kai Alce, Laurent Garnier and Marcellus Pittmann whilst being championed by Joy Orbisson, Ben UFO, Moxie, Seth Troxler, Raresh and Floating Points to name but a few. With such an impressive CV and wide ranging support, it’s wild to note that the first EP released on his own label, OCHI only came out in 2023. His star is clearly ascending with rapidity - so when we throw long term collaborator Callum Asa into the mix, things start to get really interesting.
Calum has been running Planet People for the last couple of years, welcoming incredible names such as Shed, Surgeon, Willow, Ploy, Cooly G, Rroxymore and so many more. Steel sharpens steel and having been surrounded by such esteemed talent, it’s clearly rubbed off on the pair who present 4 polished, meticulously constructed, club ready masterpieces, each with their own distinct feel and an insatiable groove.

‘Feel Me’ sets the scene with a descending baseline that would eek a wiggle out of the most reluctant spectator. The twisted dub eeks out even more groove, locking in a more sinister bounce for the heads. By The time ‘Understand’ get’s into full swing, we’re already under the spell of Carter & Asa, this is the kind of roller that could go on forever and ever. The synth embellishments and washes of analog synth pull us deeper and deeper in, prepping us for the finale , ’Try You’ which simmers with deep, brooding intensity.
The magic of the duo’s appeal is that this EP will find its way into the bags of the deepest diggers and also appeal to a new generation of house fans. Elements of it are accessible , but in the right hands - the EP will open a portal to new worlds.

Mallard & LT’s long lost 2 track dubplate, which first surfaced as an Record Store Day exclusive, comes to digital formats. Opening with a "jungle at 33 RPM" inspired 'Darien Gap', full of LT’s detailed drum programming synonymous with his style, it transcends into what could be better described as a rare breakbeat version from the 90s ambient house era. Mallard follows up with a meditative Aphex Twin meets Brian Eno generative ambient masterpiece ‘Transparent’ - seamlessly blending deep pads, field recordings, and a mind expanding chord sequence to rival the ambient pioneers.
