Act V – Gil’s Journey beyond the Thames
Haunted by mortality, Gil rides the London Overground to Stonebridge to seek Mr Dawkins, the Windrush elder whose Bridge Park centre once turned a derelict bus depot into Europe’s largest Black-led enterprise. Dawkins recounts floods of failed policies and triumphs of community resilience, London’s own Deluge story. He sets Gil a test: organise a 72-hour “Awake-a-thon” of art, sport and debate in the centre’s fading halls.
Gil barely lasts 30, collapsing from exhaustion. Still, Dawkins’ wife slips him a file, plans for a city-wide youth network, “Project Lifeline.” In it lies the “plant of renewal”: sustained investment that could outlive any one person.
