Matthewdavid’s lush and lucid EP International is a shimmering collage of coastal chillwave that engages the multiple channels in a listener’s subconscious.

A pleasurable pastiche of hazy beats, spectral synth work and saturating textures, International is a deep and dreamy endeavor. From diaphanous vocal samples to the silken strum of a guitar, soft ocean echoes to a laid-back 808, the EP lures the listener into a plush world that teems with sensory treasures. Drums glimmer like a musical mirage, gossamer melodies mingle with scattering beats while smooth waves wash over shuffles of sound.

This chill-inducing addition to the Brainfeeder catalog is compellingly rich and thoughtful, with four solid tracks that contribute another diverse layer to the label’s growing legacy. Like all of Matthewdavid’s work, International is far ahead of its time and transmutates from beginning to end, shapeshifting towards a fluid future with every glistening layer.

Manifestations is a funky and diverse sonic collection from Mono/poly, a talented member of the Brainfeeder roster. A well-paced work, the EP’s momentum grows and then contorts into other dimensions, balancing powerful rhythms and a beautiful depth for a holistically moving experience.

Manifestations has seven tracks, each with a very different tone. From the warm opening haze of the title tune to the complete crashing madness of “Punch The Troll In The Neck,” Mono/poly has cultivated a choice sonic garden to explore. The shifty beats of “Glow” are straight off the streets of Los Angeles, while the stakeout sounds of “Toe Jam” descend into the groove with fresh urgency. “Forest Dark” has a bipolar personality altogether, with a funky industrial grind that flips over headfirst into the ripples of a peaceful pond.

A strong debut on the Brainfeeder label for Mono/poly, Manifestations is a release whose many waxy layers are peeled away one at a time to reveal a glowing core of true talent and innovative sound design.

'Death Gate' marks the return of Los Angeles-based producer and DJ William Bensussen, otherwise known as The Gaslamp Killer. Describing the record, he states “Death Gate is about exploring the places between life and death, and the shattering of inner journeys that wait for us there.”

In anticipation of the release of his debut full-length album Breakthrough, the Gaslamp Killer offers a taste of the ominous urgency that infiltrates his sound with “Flange Face / Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun.”

“Flange Face (with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)” rattles into being from a scratchy dissonance and soon descends into a distorted, doom-filled drama. Twisted with tension and hemmed in by a smack of solemn strings, the track operates on a frequency of pure horror. “Flange Face (Low End Theory Edit)” takes it to the club, a bass-heavy gut puncher stripped down to the beats.

With loose drums and a rash of razor-covered synths, “Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun (with Dimlite)” unsettles into a bath of cold shudders. Inky shadows lurk just beneath the surface, dark reflections of the monsters that are strung between the beats.

Suggestively sinister, the Gaslamp Killer’s latest release is a glimpse of the artist’s contorted sonic landscape, a frightening world of chattering evil and chills that bite into the spine.

You don't get a word like "motherfucker" attached to your name for no good reason. William Bensussen, AKA The Gaslamp Killer, has been in peoples' faces right from the start. Coming up in the rock town of San Diego, Bensussen would continually clear dance floors in the city's Gaslamp district—hence the name—by playing Mobb Deep and Dilla.

Things didn't stay this way forever. In LA he became a resident DJ at Daddy Kev's Low End Theory, the mythologised weekly party and producer hangout that has seen the likes of Daedelus, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus rise from its ranks. It was on the latter's Brainfeeder that GLK met a global audience as a producer. 2009's My Troubled Mind and the following year's Death Gate threw up his love of grizzly beats and obscure samples. Seeing GLK behind a pair of turntables is, however, when the MF tag makes most sense. His shows are the epitome of unhinged energy. Rock, jazz, bass music and funk are just as likely to be aired as hip-hop, as he wigs out with his now trademark dance moves.

GLK's "Resident Killer mix" is 45-minute slice of what we're talking about—plus you get the added bonus of a coda comprised solely of music from Breakthrough, his madcap debut album which was released today through Brainfeeder.

What have you been up to recently?

Touring (as usual), working on new music with Jungle By Night from Amsterdam, not to mention enjoying this amazing summer of love!

How and where was the mix recorded?

In my room at my house in Los Angeles on ProTools with my Dr. Sample 303.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

It's one of my best mixes yet. The first part is all about the heavy newer beat music with a bunch of unreleased stuff from my worldwide crew of beat making friends. The second part is a little more hip-hop turntablist influenced and the third part is all brand new GLK Breakthrough material!

Tell us about the writing of Breakthrough.

I worked on it tirelessly between touring and touring—trying to work with some of my favourite LA musicians to make it all come to life a little more than my previous records. Also, had to reach out to Dimlite (CH) all the way out in Zurich cause he is one of my favourite producers of all time and I am working on a whole record with him soon!

Outside of your LA base, where do you see as being other key strongholds for your sound?

London, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Athens, Tokyo, Johannesburg and New York fuckin City are some of my most favourite places to play. They always get what I'm bringing to the table and always have amazing openers playing with me that make me want to run for the hills! Some of these cities even have Low End Theory-related events that stemmed from our little Wednesday night club in LA. Pretty fuckin cool.

What are you up to next?

Release parties all over the world plus a new Low End Theory podcast with a VERY special guest! Even planning a trip to India with Gonjasufi to try and record some new material there. But it's all in the works so I can't promise anything just yet!
