A special two-hour retrospective from 98.7/WFMT celebrating 50 years of Music of the Baroque as a Chicago treasure. Hosted by Maggie Clennon Reberg, the program features historic performances and commentary from Music Director Dame Jane Glover, Principal Guest Conductor Nicholas Kraemer, and founder and Conductor Laureate Thomas Wikman, as well as former principal second violin Everett Zlatoff-MIrsky, sopranos Patrice Michaels and Susanna Phillips, radio personality and singer Peter Van De Graaff, and music critic John von Rhein.

Music of the Baroque: A Celebration of 50 Years is made possible through the leadership support of The Negaunee Foundation, helping people cope with an unjust world through music education and presentation.

Music Of The Baroque A Celebration Of 50 Years, Part I of II

The album was designed as an end to end connecting experience especially for those who often feel restless, difficult to stay relax, calm, content.

It is divided into 6 progressive pieces to get into a deeper journey with yourself. All you have to do during this experience is let go. The music is meant to touch you deeply, especially to get in touch with any negative emotions and release them out. 

We can not be truly relaxed and focused if we have negative or dark emotions within ourselves, and most of the time we may not even know they even exist. The album is designed to get in touch with that side and observe it, not be overwhelmed by fear but instead embrace it, release it and let it go. 

The first piece, “Into The Yin” is meant to prepare ourselves to get into this journey and slowly relax.

The second piece “Connecting” will progressively induce a state of deeper connection with our inner self.

The 3rd piece “Contemplating” will help us start observing our inner emotions, feel and explore what is within you.

Time To Feel - Part 1 - Into The Yin

At such a demanding and delicate time, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, reflect on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh passing on January 22nd, 2022. They offer a profound insight into the memorial week, the funeral, impact on the Plum Village community, and the overwhelming global response.

This instalment of the podcast is an intimate account of the period between the announcement of Thich Nhat Hanh’s passing and the recording of this episode: “a retreat of silence, and a retreat of remembering Thay and continuing Thay.”

Brother Phap Huu, Thay’s former attendant and current Abbot of the Upper Hamlet, shares his personal relationship with Thich Nhat Hanh and how these events have impacted him. He also shares a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the traditional ceremonies and memorial services, preparations, and processions, as well as personal stories from the Plum Village communities over the eight days following the beloved teacher’s passing. 

The conversation delves into: the significance of the ceremonies’ texts; the deep practises underpinning the formalities; Thay becoming a spiritual ancestor; deep levels of aspiration; the symbolic homes for Thay’s ashes; acceptance, togetherness, and impermanence; the relevance of Thay’s teachings for years to come; and what it means to be the continuation of Thay. 

The episode ends with a short meditation on continuation and gratitude, guided by Brother Phap Huu.
