Inspiration

The 18th century Tibetan mystic Jigmé Lingpa wrote many poems about the practice of Dzogchen, one of the great wisdom traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. One such poem is Revelations of Ever-present Good from his Great Vastness Heart Drop cycle.
In A Trackless Path Ken McLeod presents a fluid contemporary translation of this poem, accompanied by a deeply moving and insightful commentary. The combination makes Jigmé Lingpa’s mystical poem relevant and accessible to today’s seeker.
We will explore the text based on Ken McLeod’s book in this 3 month course.

I attached two JRF contact microphones inside the hollow of this wonderful old Oak tree to see if I could pick up any bug sounds. I was amazed to hear that it was completely full of Death Watch Beetle. They knock their heads on the tree to attract a mate.

This recording won the Coveted Wildlife Sound Recording Society's “Silver Fox” Trophy, the Non-Avian award and a first in class 2: Species in the 2012 WSRS competition. It also won first prize in the 'sounds of nature' category in the IWT/IARC/CIMES 2013 competition awarded by the International Federation of Sound Hunters.

A peach is a sweet and soft and good thing with a stone in the middle, and this is an album about being a person. Smartphones, analogue tape, valve microphones, computers, group games and a grand banquet were used to create this collection of songs, tunes and monologues, that use a series of contradictions to talk about being alive. 

Long-term collaborators John Ellis (piano) and Paddy Steer (percussion, bass, lapsteel, synth) join Angus Fairbairn (vocal, tenor sax) along with eleven other musicians and nearly a hundred other voices in presenting sounds likened to Ethiopian jazz and Japanese folk music. Scripts and vocal delivery evoke Ivor Cutler, Emo Philips and Leonard Cohen, for this combination of theatre, live-captured music, songs, humour and philosophy.

It is a unique collection, made by unusual means designed around the artistry and conveyance of its many contributors. Created over three years in London and Manchester, it’ll be celebrated in those two towns on the dates below, following its vinyl and digital release on Manchester label Debt Records, on 28th September 2015.

A composer, musician and performer, Alabaster DePlume (Angus Fairbairn) has toured northern Europe, appeared on UK national radio and developed theatre for Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin. His many combined arts projects are based around music, and personal inclusion. In this, his third album, he has employed as many voices as he can, in conveying a method of survival he’s been taught, he says, by everyone he’s met.

Guided Meditation on Mindfulness by Chad Foreman:
Mindfulness is the foundation of all meditation training. Mindfulness is the calmly abiding on an object without judgement or labels, a pure type of seeing is cultivated that is clear and open. At this stage it is important to try and watch the breath without controlling the breath. The breath is superior to other objects of meditation because you get such great feedback from watching the breath. And it is difficult to not control it while you are watching it. It takes a skill in neutral observation, relaxation and surrender. This is of great benefit.

The key to this meditation is discipline and patience. It takes time to train with mindfulness. It takes time to overcome the addiction of following and paying attention to thoughts. So patience is needed. It takes endurance to constantly bring your attention back to your breath when it wanders off countless times in just one meditation session. But the results of this patience and discipline are a calm and steady mind that you can put to work however you like. The mental flexibility that comes from mindfulness meditation is valuable in all areas of your life. Put simply you gain control over your mind rather than it controlling you.

I AM A DOPE MC came out the Cypher Workshop series I organized at Hi-Arts in East Harlem. The participating MC's were not only doing the Freestyle Union Cypher Workshop exercises but developing as performers for our first Rap Recital. I wasn't sure how they would respond to the idea of affirmations but they loved it. Before that, I was always hesitant to niche my niche so specifically but I ended up creating a series of meditations for artist development. I'm looking forward to sharing them with the world. Hip Hop artists need support and tools to help them in the process of identifying their own voices and staying true to them.
