Picture this: you wake up after an accident, your body feeling like it’s made of lead, and everything around you is a confusing blur, as if time has come to a standstill. The atmosphere is thick with an unsettling silence, and then bam! Everything jolts back into motion, smashing through your senses like a whirlwind. This bizarre moment sticks in your mind, refusing to fade away like an unwelcome fog.

As your awareness returns, a strange mix of fear and an unexpected calm washes over you. It’s as if you’ve stepped into a twilight zone, straddling the line between dreams and reality, where the two mingle in an intricate dance. Deep inside, there’s a flicker of hope: maybe when you wake up fully, this will all turn out to be a bad dream, merely a trick of your imagination.

As you sift through this jumble of feelings, the world around you starts to come back into focus, albeit slowly. Sounds are muted, like you’re underwater, and colors pop in and out like a slideshow that can’t quite catch up. You struggle to make sense of your surroundings: the crumpled metal, shattered glass, and the distant wail of sirens cutting through the haze. Faces flit in and out of your vision—some familiar, others strangers—each one marked by an urgent energy. Yet, they feel more like shadows in a dream than real people.

Panic starts to creep in. Your heart races, every beat thudding loudly, a stark reminder of your vulnerability. You attempt to move, to shake off the fog clouding your mind and grasp the reality that feels just out of reach. But your limbs are sluggish, as if weighed down by something thick and heavy. Frustration bubbles up inside you, a primal urge pushing you to break free from this dreamlike state and face the truth head-on.

As you wrestle with the bizarre twist of time around you, the hard truth of your situation begins to sink in. The weight of your injuries presses down, reminding you that this isn't some surreal dream but an all-too-real experience. That flicker of hope dims, replaced by a pressing need to understand what’s happening. What went wrong? Where are you? And will you ever find your way back to the life you once knew?

Time seems stretched like taffy, and within that tension, you find a peculiar clarity. You come to realize that this moment, the convergence of trauma and awakening, could change everything. Gathering the scattered pieces of your thoughts, you start to construct a clearer picture of your circumstances, bracing yourself for what lies ahead. You know deep down that you must find the strength to face this new reality, even as time continues to swirl around you, caught between what has been and what might be, between hope and despair.

Project 2 in Open C (Open for Collab)

I never met my paternal grandfather, who died from a brain tumor the year before I was born. However, I felt like I knew him well from my grandmother’s stories.  A child of poverty from a very large family, he grew up in a tiny rural town in the middle of nowhere (see photo).  Despite his very humble beginnings, he knew there was a greater purpose for his life and after returning from military service, he realized his calling to enter the ministry.

His life as a preacher took him down countless roads to cities both large and small, where he planted new churches and built vibrant congregations. Throughout his life, he was known not only for the weekly messages he delivered to his congregation, but also for his life of service to others.  This composition was written to remember that life of service. The introductory theme repeated throughout represents his many travels/moves to the churches and congregations he and his family served.
