What makes a being ? What tends to be, always, and yet remains never achieved ? @jonnnah puts on this set of imagination many parts, many pieces, many elements. In this ninth release on Worst Records, the Lyon based musician gathers all the impressions defining this nebula. « Mental & Physical » is a collection above all things. We talk about a collection of influences. Industrialized trip-hop, dubstep for concrete spaces, new-age-infused ambient daydreams, links are hazy but incarnate. A constant rotation, between extasy and uneasy meditation, shapes this mass of artefacts that seems almost involuntary as they dig so deep into instinctiveness. At the root of this first magmatic opus lies a years long work in progress, a sonic research, the attempt to make live this body of vapour which is the music in becoming. It's a listening with no answer, but the pulse is vivid and vital.

Qu'est ce qui fait un être ? Qu'est ce qui tend à l'être, toujours et pourtant jamais achevé ? @jonnnah pose sur la table de l'imaginaire des parties, des pièces, des éléments. Avec ce neuvième volet de Worst Records, le lyonnais liste toutes les impressions qui dessinent cette nébuleuse. « Mental & Physical » est avant tout une collection. Collection d'influences tout d'abord. Trip-hop industrialisante, dubstep pour tunnels de béton, ambient subtilement new-age, les ponts sont ténus mais réels et palpables. Collection de sens également. Une rotation permanente, entre extase et recueillement inquiet, sculpte cet amas incertain d'artefacts qu'on dirait presque involontaires tant ils creusent dans l'instinctif. A la génèse de ce premier opus magmatique se trouve un work in progress de plusieurs années, une recherche sonore, la tentative de faire vivre ce corps toujours vaporeux de la musique en devenir. Une écoute sans réponses, mais à la pulsation vitale intacte et organique.

MSOM - Staying Local

MSOM returns with his second EP ‘Staying Local’, largely inspired by his experience of living in Cliftonville, Margate, which was recently voted the 8th coolest neighbourhood in the world.

Released as a collaboration between Ali Renault’s VIVOD label and DIY label The Fearless Few co-founded by Mikkelsen, the EP features five original tracks and five remixes available on cassette (including download) or as a download only. 

Prompted by the disproportionately high incidence of Tesla owners in one of Britain’s poorest towns, ‘Speed Freak’ - the opening track - references the YouTube phenomenon where EV drivers take unsuspecting passengers for a ride, hoping to capture their visceral reaction to the sudden acceleration of the powerful vehicle. It really is a thing!    

Using a lengthy excerpt from an interview with astronaut Donald Pettit, ‘Frontier Living’ draws parallels between life on the International Space Station and life in Margate (recently dubbed the Death Star of Thanet in an infamous newspaper article). 

Astonished by the often vitriolic debates that raged on social media during Covid, ‘Dr Surf’ highlights the slight absurdity of self taught individuals taking on the scientific community on the basis of information garnered from their own echo chambers. 

‘Hounds of Cliftonville’ poses the question whether Covid brought about another pandemic locally, with the size of the canine population having pretty much exploded since the pandemic. 

‘Escape to the Avenues’, meanwhile, tells the tale of nouveau locals escaping the mean streets of Cliftonville (and its primary schools), exchanging the latter for a more palatable alternative with sea views and palm trees.

“Heroes Of The East“, a story about love, pride and rivalry is re-written by Belgian producer Placid One who’s style perfectly fits to the Shaw Cuts trademark sound. 
The story begins with an arranged marriage between Chinese Kung Fu student Ho Tao and Japanese Yumiko Koda who is highly-trained in Karate. They live together happily until one day, they decide to practice together. „Morse“, its blazing pads, energetic percussion and powerful rhythm weaves and chimes in sync with their intense and raw training duel.
Relentless arguing about which martial style and philosophy is better leads Koda to become offended, so she returns to Japan. “Foothills“ is a bright, sonic forcefield and its pulsating drums set the tone for a voyage of mixed emotions and self-doubt. 
Marital and cultural misunderstandings lead Koda’s former school in Japan to send seven of their strongest students to fight Ho Tao and prove which country has superior fighting styles. Spurred on by radiant pads, chasing percussions and the heavy kickdrum of „Melopée“, Ho Tao wins all battles, two by trickery. He even begins to admire and learn about Japanese culture and martial prowess. 
But there is one more duel. Takeno, Koda’s master, challenges Ho Tao to a clash of styles. Darts, needles and shurikens catapult through the air, swords and spears collide, and crab style takes on fujian white crane. Armed with sharp chords, colossal drum jabs and menacing soundscapes, Lazarus supports the titan duel with his remix version of „Foothills“. No victor, no bloodshed, just respect and peace among all.
