Our David on Winlaton: 'Winlaton was written during deep lockdown. Nothing was open and late night running was the only space I had to myself. I suppose it reflects on what methods you can try to use when you feel lost. On one late night trek however, I realised I wasn’t just lost mentally at that time but geographically as I’d managed to run all the way to Winlaton.'

Quavers is about that run in at the bar with the one who outstays their welcome in every social interaction. It's about the men you meet who open with 'I'm not racist, but…'. It's written to out the bad behaviours of the trust fund babies whose actions force you into angry outbursts and confectionary theft.

It's a song written to play live and an experiment to see where our sound can go next, influenced by bands like Idles, Pulled Apart by Horses, The Streets, Courtney Barnett and Enter Shikari. It's meant to be turned up loud and screamed along to. We hope you enjoy it.

“Simple Fires” reflects the concerns and realities of our shared, climate-connected world. The Canadian wildfires of 2023 saw several global cities (including Montreal and New York) report some of the worst air quality on record, causing widespread alerts and evacuations. The smoke not only impacted North America but also crossed the Atlantic, impacting the lives of Europeans. In response, Nicol ponders if what is done cannot be undone. 

“The farther we come, the closer we get to destruction…” Nicol laments, “Simple fires can be mended, but not the kind that’s burning up in me”. 
 
“Simple Fires” is accompanied by an animated official video by Quentin Delobel (Poppip Studio), which paints a moving picture of humans' destruction of nature. Of the music video, director Quentin says, “I followed the feeling of child-like naïveté conveyed in the song and came up with this imaginary yet unfortunately familiar world - one that ends with a dark real life twist.” Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdJgsDWxXWQ

Hallmarked with the kind of thoughtful lyricism and graceful melancholia that have become his calling cards, in his latest outing Alex Nicol casts a withering gaze upon a natural world being laid to waste at the hands of ignorance, governmental inaction, and corporate industrial greed.

After spending the better part of two years on the road opening for La Dispute, Tegan and Sara, and more, Chicago based Pictoria Vark revisits her debut single, "I Can't Bike" from The Parts I Dread, with a remix from Get Better Records label mate, Teenage Sequence. The London-based artist puts a lighthearted, New Wave spin on the breezy lead single.

 

"Pictoria Vark is such a great storyteller, and 'I Can’t Bike' instantly captivated me. I totally fell in love with the track and the bass line — it’s so powerful and driving, but holds everything together perfectly, almost like something Peter Hook would do, which led to me thinking, 'what if New Order wrote this song?' and that’s what I tried to do,” says Dewan-Dean Soomary, aka Teenage Sequence, on the inspiration for this remix.

Free the Night is the seventh full-length album from Victory Kicks. Initially recorded over a series of late-night sessions during the height of the pandemic, it was reworked in the year or so that followed. It's ten songs are about love, loss and baseball set against the backdrop of the early 2020s.
