Esta semana nos ha dejado Pete Seeger. Él estuvo antes que nadie. Antes sólo están Woody Guthrie y los cantantes de blues del Missisipi.
Durante estos días se dirán muchas cosas sobre él y sus más de sesenta años de carrera. Como nos encanta hurgar en los lugares menos explorados de nuestro planeta musical, hoy queremos dedicar dedicar #freemusicfridays a la primera etapa de Pete Seeger, sus años con la banda The Weavers. Junto a ellos se pasó los años cuarenta tocando para la clase obrera americana, hasta que en los cincuenta el grupo fue vetado durante la era McCarthy. A finales de la década, con la caída de McCarthy The Weavers volvieron del ostracismo con un concierto en el Carnegie Hall, que se grabó y fue un disco super ventas. De hecho, se lo considera el primer disco en directo de la Historia de la música popular.
Algunas de las mejores canciones de su repertorio, Pete Seeger las aprendió en aquella época:  Wimoweh, If I had a Hammer, El frente de Gandesa, Suliram, Die Gedanken sind frei o la preciosa balada de despedida que os regalamos hoy, Good Night Irene, del bluesman Lead Belly. Os dejamos con esta humilde versión que nos pusimos a grabar antes de ayer, en cuanto oímos la triste noticia. Hasta siempre, Pete.
