Dylan Hilsley is a force to be reckoned with in the history of Drum & Bass. Having put his mark on the scene with an instantly recognisable sound he’s helped catapult a lot of careers through his involvement on labels such as Outbreak, Biotic, Cylon and obviously Freak Recordings.

Seeking me out as the connaisseur of all things Horsmenism (another one of those things Dylan can be held accountable for), DJ I-witness kind of challenged me to do an all Dylan mix. Scouring my collection and Dylan’s back catalogue I re-discovered a lot of tunes and behold: a new mix was born.

I haven’t uploaded anything new in quite a while, and I figured today is the day. Back in December, Calibre’s Shelflife Sessions swept drum & bass right back onto the main floor, front and center, where it belongs. To seal the night, the reins went to local heavyweights Bredren. The Belgian trio carved out a closing set that’ll echo down Rue Blaes for a while with two and a half hours of pure, calculated chaos, delivered with vocal attitude, screaming subs, and just the right amount of percussive energy. 

From deep rollers to high-octane steppers, their selections danced between the cerebral and the savage, keeping the pit on a steady boil. A lesson in momentum, temperature control, and taste.

Episode 34 of the livecast series comes from Traffic — one of the driving forces behind the underground drum & bass movement in the Russian Far East and across the country, a producer and resident event organizer with :data.

With over two decades of experience, Traffic’s path has taken him from the first d’n’b nights in Vladivostok to sets at some of the most respected venues in Russia. He has grown from a local enthusiast into a key figure of the scene, with releases on RAM, ProgRam, Demand, and other international labels.

Today, Yuri is an organizer and active contributor to the Moscow-based label Data Music, as well as the curator of its namesake event series — known for its deep sound and commitment to the genre’s roots.

Forgiven Soul & The Faraday - Cold Fusion

With the news that Biotic Records (https://www.facebook.com/bioticrecords) are setting up and releasing again, I finally got the chance to complete my collection of the first run of vinyl from one of the most consistent, yet underrated, labels in drum & bass history.

Whilst everyone raved about Renegade Hardware, Outbreak and Cylon, Biotic sat back and released some of the best 2nd Generation Techstep out there. From the seminal Plankton to B-Key showing what was to come in his Scientific Wax days with the likes of Intruder and Element, Every single Biotic release had something for the darker heads in the dnb scene.

This mix is a 2 hour tribute to a superb label, with at least one track off of every vinyl release - with the exception of the Plankton VIP release, as I'd already got the original in. It also includes the Biotic remix of Dieselboy & Tech Itch's anthem Atlantic State.

So, if you like you dnb dark and techy, strap in for 2 hours of a true phenomenon.
