Disquiet Junto Project 0483: Type Set
The Assignment: Use a recording of yourself typing something as the underlying rhythmic track for a piece of music.

Type Set, For Manual Typewriter Disquiet0483

Recorded typing while listening to minimal industrial techno. The keyboard was recorded with a condenser microphone above it and a contact microphone attached to the body of the keyboard. I recorded each microphone to separate tracks. I then used the contact microphone track to trigger an envelope follower that opened two VCAs. One VCA was connected to a VCO and the other to a 2hp Pluck. A melody was sent to both from a 2hp Turing Machine. The signal was split and one part was sent through the Doepfer Wasp filter. This signal was then recorded and added to the two earlier tracks. The contact mic track was duplicated and passed through Ableton's Spectral Resonator and the combined tracks were passed through Sinevibes' Luminance v2 plugin.

reverting (disquiet0483)

In response to the weekly Disquiet Junto Project #483: Type Set, here is my submission consisting of me typing a part of John Lewis 1963 speech from the March On Washington, then I added a track using a Make Noise 0-Coast synthesizer and a third track using Mutable Instruments Elements Modal Synthesis module controlled by an ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout module. 
Typewriter track was recorded with a Zoom H2n audio recorder, imported to Cakewalk, then the two synth tracks were recorded direct with Cakewalk.

Disquiet0483 - Type Set Typo

For this challenge, Type Set, I used the sound of a keyboard typing the first two stanza's of Edgar Allan Poe's, 'The Raven' .  The typing was performed and recorded by my close collaborator, JC Petkovich, who used a JD40 which he built and dropped into a CNC'ed aluminum case. JC also added foam between the PCB and case to dampen the noise, the switches are Aqua Zilent switches which are also very quiet. The keyboard recording was then processed using Supercollider to "tune" the key sounds using a band pass filter. In addition,  recordings of raindrops as well ravens were also similarly processed and used in the final piece. The work was assembled and mixed in Ableton Live 10 and some software instruments were added.

Disquiet Junto Project 0494: Record a 20-second clip of the sounds of an insect that you yourself have invented.

The Planck Fly loves electromagnetic waves and therefore usually lives in particle accelerators, where it feeds on cables. Due to the prime number order of its spin, however, it moves at an alternative Planck length, which is particularly noticeable in acoustic recordings like this one. Its seemingly discontinuous movement through space and sound should not blind us to the fact that we also move discretely, just at a different scale. Their sting is harmless, by the way, and is usually described as invigorating.

The Planck Fly [disquiet0494]

These samples were captured on my Zoom recorder today, using only the things around my house. I tried to incorporate sounds from the things that have been a part of my daily life in isolation; planting seeds, watering plants, closing doors, sanitizing things, making medicinal tinctures from Astragalus and Chaga, cutting my own hair and sewing masks. These drum samples are all sounds from activities I've just mentioned. Some of them have been pitched up or down inside of ableton.
