Dorothy meets the 3 munchkins and receives their advise on finding The Wizard of Oz.

“This Land is Your Land” is simultaneously a patriotic hymn for schoolchildren, a rallying cry for immigrants, and, in Woody Guthrie’s original version, a sardonic protest song. But the message remains the same: America belongs to everyone, regardless of race, religion, or nationality.

My variations aim to reflect the reality of America’s situation. African-Americans are incarcerated at disproportionate rates, people from Muslim-majority countries endure travel bans, and Mexican immigrants are forced to cross treacherous deserts for a chance at a livelihood.

Each variation grows more distant from the theme and more violent in character, just as our country has grown distant from the ideals of this song. The piece concludes with a prayer for forgiveness, and we are left wondering, “Whose land is this land?”

Breck McGough’s award-winning scores have premiered at national and international film festivals. He studied both humanities and music at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he began scoring films for his classmates and writing music for dance. He has received commissions from Harding Fine Arts Academy, Race Dance Company, the Oklahoma Contemporary Dance Festival, and Opera On Tap - OKC. He received his master's degree in music from the University of Central Oklahoma, where he had the pleasure of studying composition with Samuel Magrill and L. Keith White. He is currently a doctoral candidate at Baylor University, studying composition with Scott McAllister.
