Life Science Records is proud to announce composer Michael Keane’s latest project Distance Major.  The self-titled debut is set to release exclusively on Bandcamp, Sept 6, 2025 and will release worldwide in October 2025

Michael Keane is the Bronx-born, New Jersey-based composer behind the Textbook Maneuver  and Distance Major aliases. A classically trained pianist with a punk DIY heart, Keane blends cerebral sound design with cinematic storytelling, drawing from a wide palette of influences that stretch from Genesis (Duke era), Rush, and Gary Numan to The Postal Service, U.N.K.L.E., and Phantogram. Under the Distance Major moniker, his releases balance the intellectually introspective feel of the best instrumental indie rock with the emotional resonance of ambient and prog-influenced electronica, offering soundscapes fit for film, television, and interactive media. His music thrives on improvisation and sonic experimentation, refusing easy classification while remaining deeply accessible. 

Distance Major shared: “The tracks on the debut LP were composed between November 2024 and August 2025.  I was trying to incorporate many aspects of synthesizer rock along with chill modern jazz.  I am trying to capture strong emotions and melodic flow even in the absence of lyrics.” Get on board now with this talented emerging new artist!

NYC 1970s Cinema

A high-energy, instrumental jazz-funk piece in a major key, featuring a prominent brass section, a walking bass line, and a driving drum beat. The tempo is upbeat, creating a lively and danceable feel. The primary instruments are a trumpet, trombone, saxophone, electric bass, and drum kit. The brass section plays a call-and-response melody, with the trumpet often taking the lead. The bass provides a consistent, rhythmic foundation with a walking pattern. The drums maintain a steady, syncopated groove with prominent hi-hat and snare work. Production elements include a clean mix with clear separation of instruments, and a slight reverb on the brass to add depth. The song structure is primarily verse-chorus, with instrumental breaks allowing for improvisation-like melodic variations within the brass section. There are no vocals present in this piece.

About our guest:

Dr. Jeff Albert is Interim Chair and Associate Professor of the School of Music at the Georgia Institute of technology.  

His areas of research and creative practice include improvisation and interaction, jazz performance, performance paradigms for live computer music, and audio production.  

He has performed in concerts and festivals in the U.S and throughout Europe, and contributed as a performer, producer, or engineer on over 60 recordings, including the 2017 Grammy winner for Best Traditional Blues Album. He has been named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll, and his album Unanimous Sources was named a Top 10 album of 2020 by Jan Garelick in the Boston Globe. 

Albert received his B.M. from Loyola University New Orleans, and his M.M. from the University of New Orleans. In May of 2013, he became the first graduate of the PhD program in Experimental Music and Digital Media at Louisiana State University, where he was a founding member of the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana (LOLs).

Laureato in filosofia e diplomato in trombone, come compositore ha vinto diversi premi, tra i quali il primo premio al concorso “2 agosto” di Bologna (2006) con Papageno made me write this piece per flauto e orchestra e il premio “Potsdamer Divertimenti” con Bricks, per timpani e orchestra d’archi (2008). Ha realizzato, in collaborazione con l'Associazione Motoperpetuo di Pavia, gli spettacoli Kublai (2012), melologo jazz per narratore e sette strumenti su testi tratti da Il Milione di Marco Polo, e Seven Sins Suite (2013), suite polistilistica per sette strumenti ispirata ai vizi capitali. Nel 2019 ha vinto il premio “Città di Todi” con Preludio tudertino, per orchestra studentesca ed è stato segnalato all’Eisenacher Kompositionspreis per Der Kantor, composizione per grande orchestra.
