Playas. A playa is a dry, vegetation-free, flat area at the lowest part of an undrained desert basin. Between wet periods the surface of the playa typically completely dries out and may even become desiccated, forming polygonal cracks and fissures as clay-rich sediments dry out.

Playas affected by occasional surface floods are usually dry.
First, the playa has to fill with water, which must be deep enough to form floating ice during winter, but still shallow enough that the rocks are exposed.
Today, some playas are appreciated and protected because of their value to wildlife. Playas' importance as water storage sites is also recognized - they provide between 10 and 25 percent of the annual irrigation water in some counties. To protect this water source from pollution, many farmers are adopting playa-friendly farming techniques like planting native vegetation around playas to filter sediment, fertilizer, and pesticides from the runoff that provides playas' water supplies. Sediment in runoff can fill playas, reducing their capacity to hold water and depleting biodiversity. An emerging threat to playas is that some farmers in the Southern High Plains are returning to dry farming techniques, which means less rainwater reaches playas. Some new irrigation methods can lead to decreases in the amount of water reaching playas as well, by altering runoff patterns. In some places, playas are still used as lagoons to hold animal waste, which seriously decreases their ability to support wildlife and can threaten groundwater purity.
What Is a Healthy Playa?
A healthy playa has an intact clay basin — without excavated pits or ditches — that is not buried by sediment from nearby fields. Water from the surrounding watershed freely enters the basin through a native vegetative buffer without being diverted from the playa by roads, terraces or other impediments.

While playas provide critical wetland habitat for wildlife, they also provide important benefits for the people who live in this region. Playas, when healthy, provide a sustainable water source for communities and rain-fed operations, water filtration, flood control, livestock forage, and recreation.
