This week on the show we present Deployment Strategies from Porto in Portugal.

Dj since 2006 under the name Wasteyouth and co-founder of the collective “ Are Friends Electrik?” hosting underground parties in Portugal. He runs a weekly radio show called “Resistance Is Futile ” on Seance Radio together with Joanna Jago. In 2013 he started producing under the name Deployment Strategies. He sent us this really great 2-hour live set, a journey from experimental to techno. Performed live by Deployment Strategies.

Bio:
Deployment Strategies is the production project of Vitor Sousa, natural from Porto (Portugal). Since 2006 he has been djing under the name Wasteyouth and with the simplest of goals: "put music... loud... in a dark place".
He is one of the founders of the collective and electronic music community “ Are Friends Electrik? ”, with mind set to discover and share music, gathering like ­minded individuals and hosting underground parties where the music was the common denominator.

Currently he also hosts the weekly radio show “ Resistance Is Futile ”, airing on Seance Radio in the UK, together with Joanna Jago.

In 2013 he decided to go inward in his search for sounds and so Deployment Strategies was born. With this artist/label project he aims to live in a world of frequencies organizing sonic events in what some may call music.

South Africa breeds so many new rhythms and electronic music styles at such a fast pace that it’s hard to keep up. This thriving musical ecosystem has produced genres like kwaito, shangaan electro or the South African afro-house style (and its multiple subgenres like durban or bacardi house), but now there’s a whole new genre to add to that list. Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to introduce you to the entrancing gqom style and its biggest champion Jumping Back Slash.

This hard-to-pronounce genre is the latest to come out of this exciting scene and the man making the rest of thee world pay attention is Jumping Back Slash. After moving to South Africa he fell in love with a new sound that was coming out of Durban, where kids fired up cracked copies of Fruity Loops and started reducing afro-house and kwaito to its most basic elements. Everything gets stripped away until all you have is a syncopated beat, a menacing bassline and a few vocal chops thrown in for good measure. The results are minimalistic, dark and hypnotic, and we can’t get enough of it.

Inspired by this fresh wave of club music coming from the South African underground, Jumping Back Slash has been putting out a stream of amazing tracks in the gqom style, and his contribution to the Upper Cuts series confirms that he’s on a roll right now. In true gqom fashion Kanganga is dark, menacing, uplifting and danceable, all at the same time. This repetitive yet unpredictable beat serves as the perfect example of a sound which is still taking its first steps, but is already positioning itself to become the next big thing to come out of the South African dance music scene. BREGER kicks off a new series presenting Kafka Tempo's soundscapes: "This set showcases the full range of my label Kafka Tempo, moving from Minimal through Psytechno and Darkprog, with a few broken-beat pit stops along the way. Performed live at Psyworthy in Portugal, May 2025." Goa-based BREGER is not one to sit still. As the owner of Kafka Tempo and co-founder of Copycow and Beatplantation Festival in Germany, he has spent 20 years supporting underground culture. His music has appeared on labels like Zenon and Soupherb, with standout releases including Hippies in Danger. With three LPs and hundreds of tracks, he moves between minimal and raw techno, always carrying a dark and groovy edge. His love for psychedelic elements is evident in his productions and continues to inspire. In his sets, Breger keeps things unpredictable, blending improvised sounds and samples to break away from repetition. He shifts freely between live and DJ sets, flowing with the moment. With a busy summer of gigs ahead, his winter months will be spent in residency with the beach collective Vortex Goa.

Our cozy Island, nestled deep in a valley, surrounded by river and waterfalls and covered by green grass is hosting The Swamp stage. Hottest and most memorable part of the festival's location is home to Dark Progressive, Psy Bass, Dub, Breaks, Techno, Glitch and other various styles of music. With PSYCHEDELIC as only common denominator and DANCE as the main philosophy behind it.

When we started building Mo:Dem accordingly to our vision of festival with three musical stages, the role of The Swamp was a crucial one. Basic idea was to generate counterbalance to the faster and heavier musical styles presented at The Hive. Creating 'alternative stage' wasn’t our intention. Rather we imagined The Swamp as the extension of same psychedelic dance experience. Possibility to select between artists coming from a wide spectrum of psychedelic music gave us an opportunity to succeed in our plan. As Swamp literally and figuratively means diversity and variety, this was set as the main guideline for this stage in the future.

We are happy that we can share with you some sounds from 2017. edition. This time we are presenting you Knobs.

The 30th and milestone story of our series is marked by the wonderful Portuguese duo Ohxalá. It is with great pleasure to host this rare sound on our series. Porto - Portugal. "Banho Maria" is the Portuguese expression for a slow-cooking technique used to melt chocolate. Enjoy two hours of slow, melting sounds enhanced by Ohxalá's unique touches.

Ohxalá is the musical project of Maria & Luis who live in Porto, Portugal Their tracks are part of several mixtapes around the world within the growing wave of ethnobeats. In 2017 they released their debut EP “O Futuro do Passado” in Casa Caos (BR), Dona Cuíca EP on Cosmic Awakenings (US) and more recently the Sereias do Planeta Vermelho Ep on Ready Mix Records (CA) with remixes from acclaimed producers such as M. Rux, Lemurian, Dandara, Discoshaman, Intiche, Nillo & Maracuyá, MiRET, Thommie G and Rodrigo Gallardo.

The duo is eager to explore a thematic cut with a focus on Portuguese, Brazilian and African culture, inspired by the strong rhythmic foundation of popular and ancient music. Their productions are full of field recordings and booming bass lines and they did not skimp on the effort to incorporate traditional ethnic folk elements into contemporary electronic music - which is what makes this project a unique musical experience.

This voyage is a live recording of the duo's DJ set at a Banho Maria party in Maus Hábitos.

Goa-based Breger is not one to sit still. As the owner of @Kafka-Tempo and co-founder of @Copycow and @Beatplantation Festival in Germany, he has spent 20 years supporting underground culture. His music has appeared on labels like Zenon and Soupherb, with standout releases including Hippies in Danger. With three LPs and hundreds of tracks, he moves between minimal and raw techno, always carrying a dark and groovy edge. His love for psychedelic elements is evident in his productions and continues to inspire.

In his sets, Breger keeps things unpredictable, blending improvised sounds and samples to break away from repetition. He shifts freely between live and DJ sets, flowing with the moment. With a busy summer of gigs ahead, his winter months will be spent in residency with the beach collective @VortexGoa.
