Satisfactions Of An Early Riser

Composer Michael Holohan was presented with a challenge to perform a musical piece for the concert which would particularly emphasise the overtone qualities of two bass bronze horns.  He chose to compose a remarkable arrangement for the well-known Irish tune,  ‘The May Morning Dew’.  The piece begins with the church organ.  The distinctive melody is played by Breifne Holohan on an acoustic metal stringed guitar.  Two horns are introduced in stages.   The effect is of a simple melancholy air being magnified and exalted until the music almost seems ethereal.  The church is filled with a multi-dimensional sound scape that defies explanation.  Here is the real manifestation of instrumental overtone sound.  The musical achievement is made all the more remarkable in that no electronics or effects of any kind are employed either during the performance or subsequently in the music mix. Biosphere is the main recording name of Geir Jenssen (born 1962), a Norwegian musician who has released a notable catalogue of ambient music. He is well known for his early "ambient techno" aesthetic and later for his "arctic ambient" style, his use of music loops, and peculiar samples from sci-fi sources. His track "Novelty Waves" was used for the 1995 campaign of Levi's. His 1997 album Substrata was voted by www.hyperreal.org  as one of the all time classic ambient albums. But over the last few years his albums (such as Cirque, Shenzou, Autour de la lune, Dropsonde and N-plants) have embodied some touches of jazz, classical, drone and even some dub-techno. An Irish musician/composer based in Co. Louth, Holohan's music crosses a vast range of genres, from modern classical, acoustic guitar and minimalist music, to traditional Irish, ambient and electroacoustic styles. A regular performer of his own work, he has also had his music performed by various ensembles and soloists such as the Contempo Quartet, John O' Shea, Mary McCague, Paul Roe and John Feeley.
