One of Detroit’s finest exports is legendary house and techno pioneer, Gari Romalis, and as we enter what could potentially be a summer of love he creates an outstanding four track EP, “Black Traxx Matter”, spreading a message which scratches way below the surface, using music as a tool to share. The body of work spans across distinctive and slinky deep house energy, oozing class and emotion, notably what we have all come to love and adore in Romalis’ back catalogue. Music from the soul, for the soul, coming soon on Italian label, Nicepeople.

Opener “Black 2 Da Future” rides an effortlessly cool groove, brushing by in the summer breeze, paying homage to brighter days. Next up is “Black Diamondz (Africa Mix)”, consisting of a tight and punchy drum arrangement, and warm and infectious sub bass. Welcoming you with open arms.

“Black Luv” is lighter on its feet than the previous tracks, a definite housey spring in its step, all of the elements conversing in sweet harmony. A cruise down nostalgia lane. “Purpose Reprise (Motivate Mix)” closes this wonderful EP. Six and a half minutes of pure bliss which shifts into a pure and powerful moment when a spoken word sample enters the room, as the soft keys work their way around the message.

A masterpiece body of work from one of the most esteemed artists in the game. The Nicepeople label keep continuing to propel high quality sounds from new and established artists, with a healthy schedule already pencilled in for 2021.

Véritable coup de coeur de l’équipe, Herman Kolgen est un artiste pluridisciplinaire reconnu depuis 20 ans pour ses créations en arts médiatiques. Il vit et travaille à Montréal. Véritable sculpteur audiocinétique, il tire son matériau premier de la relation intime entre le son et l’image. Kolgen travaille à créer des objets qui prennent la forme d’installations, d’oeuvres vidéo et fi lmiques, de performances et de sculptures sonores. En exploration constante, il travaille à la croisée de différents médias, élaborant ainsi un nouveau langage technique et esthétique singulier.

Ghostnotes (2010) - for solo clarinet and tape

Ghostnotes was inspired by a DART journey made from Connolly train station to Shankill in South County Dublin. Strange sounds onboard the train reminiscent of a well-worn clarinet emerged, emitting only a small range of notes. These notes repeated like a melodic motif building slowly and then falling away. When I reached my destination I peered into the adjacent carriages either side of me but could not find the mysterious creator of these sounds. The memory of these “ghostnotes” remained with me and provoked the idea to compose a piece based on their unique character accompanied by a recording of interior of the DART I once travelled on.

Daniel McDermott is an Irish composer, guitarist, pianist and producer. His output includes albums, remixes and modern classical pieces. He studied in Queens University Belfast, Dundalk Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin. His music fuses elements of jazz, classical, world, minimal techno and electronica. He has achieved one scholarship in composition and has attended composition masterclasses under Donnacha Dennehy and Simon Bainbridge. His classical music has been selected by the Crash Ensemble for Free State 7, Free State 9 and awards include the IMRO music award. He has released three electronica albums; his third  “The Lullaby Wars” was released on Milkbox records.  His music has also been performed by world renowned Oud virtuoso Marina Toschich, the Fidelio trio, The Crash ensemble, Paul Roe, Plane Dukes Rahman trio, Maire Carroll,  The Contempo Quartet, The Behn Quartet, Lina Andonovska, New Dublin Voices and The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.
