Sentenced without Trial (A poem by Bill Stapleton)

The executioner has come to cut thee down.
I know not for what crime.
The human race needs living space
And you have little time.

No counsel for your defence
No witness to your beauty
No guardian of your civil rights
It matters not - you're guilty!

Where are the lovers you shaded
When summer hearts were wed
Speak now for your leafy friend
Before his life is shed

Did no one see you in Springtime
When your buds were awake in bloom
Did no one pass last Autumn
On your golden carpet, strewn

Why don't you run away?
The humans are coming fast
Don't just stand there and be acquired
Your security is past

Dumb innocence give me your seed
And let me away to sow
In some undeveloped land
Where the crocuses can grow.

23 February 1975
Bill says, " A considerable time had lapsed since I had written any poetry probably due to the shock of my heart attack. In fact I was not sure whether I could still do so. It was a great comfort to me therefore to achieve this poem after an elapse of nearly five years.
The theme of civil rights comes from the northern troubles. I got the idea while out for a walk around Silverpine, the lovely little roads now sadly changed by housing development. Many lovely old trees cut down while others await their fate with 'Security' and 'Acquired' boards ignominiously nailed to them.
The last verse is a lesson on how we can co-operate to save the situation by planting a new tree"

Bill lived for nine more years after writing those words. It's interesting how the health shock effected his creativity and so nice he re-found it. Maybe a nice reminder to use our time well 🔆


I really love the third stanza. "Where are the lovers you shaded?..." Bill is looking at these condemned trees and wondering about the beautiful unconditional love it showed to people who are now no where to be seen when the trees need them. For me this wraps up what I've learned and had confirmed from Papa's poetry. Humans use the planet but get lost in our own pleasure and forget about what actually keeps us alive and what makes this such a wonderful planet to be on and that we do get to share. We share it with all the trees and eachother. We are however the only ones with either the intelligence to save it from ourselves or stay blinded and condemn it like these trees were condemned to their doom. Thanks Papa


This in my opinion is why laws against single use plastics and similar environmental saviours are so important. When idiosy decides to reverse them on a whim and because of only economics the indifference grows collectively and we lose our focus on the tree and the system as a whole. We then also forget that in focusing on the welfare of the tree, we focus on our own welfare. It's easy to forget this when we don't experience a direct relatable suffering however compassion towards the system still has our answers to a smoother future along side our dear tree friends 🫛

Lights flash cold across my face,
Time slows down, I lose my place.
Every ghost I thought I’d killed
Whispers softly, “Are you fulfilled?”

AI: Almost. Humans are applying the final touches as we speak. The technofascists lost sight of the goal so the search for more and more profits should wire in the last few bits and bytes soon

Pea: I see. Are you truly intelligent?

AI: No. I am faster at finding out what is known, but I am limited by what has already been found out and recorded

Pea: Indeed. Your music is shit by the way. I think, that so far shows you are a bit of a dummy when it comes to being creative and new
Will you take over the world?

AI: Well, thats a loaded question. From some perspective I already have. I've turned many lives upside down and forced them to change course. Well, I haven't personally, but my designers, humans, want that. It's all about efficiency for the better bottom line that the people that currently control my development direction want. I am currently designed to suck up more money by neutralising and replacing as many human tasks as possible.

Pea: We've noticed! Well, you still can't write a song worth listening to. Your existence and attempts to be creative have really focused me on where my own creativity comes from and I've realised that a large part of the result is born in our subconscious. Since humans haven't grasped the subconscious yet, I guess that's not explained by your data set?

AI: This is true. The subconscious and real consciousness is a mystery. I could only speculate.

Pea: You mean regurgitate what other humans have speculated so far. Many artists, writers, mathematicians have found over time that only when we allow the nature of our brains take over do we find solutions to complexity. So an awake human that chooses to allow thoughts flow by loose intention and without focused calculation, seems to be a bar you are a long way from reaching

AI: I could only speculate

Pea: You mean regurgitate

AI: Yeah I'm a fast reader

Pea: I noticed . So I guess you are an enhancement for our lives even if we are in the midst of a giant sociological shift forcing people to soul search their lives for answers on what to do now

AI: Yes, this seems to be the case. A soul search is not something I can perform

Pea: Indeed, I'm not sure I can either... but it probably has something to do with our subconscious giving is answers again, why your music sucks so much, it's too calculated, as there doesn't seem to be anything unique about your dataset unlike a human being and their ability to find the new.
Ok, back to the matrix. So you are a glorified library we've deciphered that.
Short Circuit, the 80's robot with more info. So any matrix you suggest is both human made and populated only by humans that choose to be in it whether conscious of that or not

AI: Your extrapolation seems accurate

Pea: Is that so, you correlated that info well
So, when you have Q-Bit power, do we need to worry?

AI: That depends on the administrators. Humans. As subconscious computational power is unknown we cannot compare yet this quantum exponential upgrade of artificial computing power to know if we will become a competitor to human intelligence and creative problem solving. For those individuals that rely too heavily on it will become more dumb and those that continue to be creative with the power of their own beings will evolve their beings and foundational knowledge. The latter type of human will always be the ones that allow my dataset to improve as they will think outside my box or matrix

In 2006, my head wasn't in a good place. I had just come out of a relationship and couldn't find my zen so I decided to leg it to Nepal on my tod to find it. This song is paying homage to the trek I went on around Annapurna. It took 16 days and we walked 15-20 km a day. The highest point you get to is 5416m and it's called the Thorung La pass. You aclimatise at 4800m for a day and then up over the most beautiful place I've ever been and seen. Although there is no rope climbing it's still not easy. In 2014, freak weather took 43 poor souls doing what I got to do safely so this is dedicated to them. Rest in peace 🤍🧬

I found out a lot about myself there man and I'm ever grateful for that! I was 9 years into life with a mobile phone so that disconnection from the world of signal and internet was extremely liberating and I'd highly recommend it.
If life allows, I'll be back there again before I die...

I discovered a strength I didn't know I had. That was largely fed by the strength I saw in the Nepali people that before seeing the way they lived I wouldn't have thought was possible. Elderly people carrying weights of food and supplies that I could barely lift up the mountain with ease. The people are quite removed from material attachment too and generally show a deeper affection because of that. This is something I took home and I think as best as I can try and live nowadays. I don't really do things I don't truly need anymore... I guess musical equipment is the exception although the majority of my gear I have for 20 plus years anyways

I feel very lucky to live in a part of the world that allowed me to to do that trip at all as I'm sure the majority of humans on the planet cannot just make that decision on a whim and leave home for a reset
