A Summer Love Story

Fall Infusion

We are deeply excited to share Donato and Marco’s grand finale for the last edition of Terraforma at Villa Arconati. With great humbleness, these two masters and dear friends have carefully broadened and lulled, record after record, an intimate space of trust, exchange and deep-time connection. 
 
Also, we’d like to add a fond memory that was shared with us a few days after:

“Dozzy and Shuttle’s finale unfolded like twilight. A prolonged dusk caressed by an eerie drizzle. Shadows and whispers echoing with the surroundings. Synapses slowly reaching the ground, merging and becoming one with the underground rhizomatic networks. A memorable rendez-Nous within a fractal space. It felt like being at the core center of the matrix, enveloped by a warmth reminiscent of a maternal womb. I found myself in a weightless suspension, envisioning the past, the present and the future, all together in a blink of an eye.”

The way I see it, DJing is really three skills:
1. Technical mixing ability
2. Track selection + sorting
3. Knowledge of those tracks

I've been a bedroom DJ for 6 years now. In that time, one of the things I've had trouble finding is information about DJing that's actually useful. There's lots of basic information out there on #1 - mixing tips and tricks, technical bits, beginners stuff, and so on. But there's precious little on more advanced things like #2 and #3. This mix, and my thoughts below, are a milestone on figuring out #2. As you listen to the mix, what can you hear? What's similar?

My mixing style isn't just the "ones and twos" back and forth mixing style that's ubiquitous today. I've spent the last several years honing in on a style that's similar to the more technical Techno DJs like Chris Liebing, Nicole Moudaber, and Dubfire. In the same time, I've struggled with finding a musical style that I can stick with. I'd find a sound that I liked - deep, tropical, progressive, dark, g-house, dirtybird - only to dump it for something else months later. I kept finding some tracks that worked together, getting stoked on it, buying more tracks like that, and finding that slowly it worked less and less. It got diluted.

It came down to sorting my music. I aggressively sorted my entire music library, looking for commonalities across grooves, moods, and so on. Over the last year, I've re-sorted my entire music library four times.

And now, I think I've got it. My mixing style requires having music grouped together that's extremely similar. Groove, feeling, style - all must be there for it to work. The music you hear in this mix all has a specific hi hat pattern that drives the groove all the way through. At the chill end, it's a basic kick-hat-kick; on the energetic side it's full on jacking house. Getting this music sorted together is the culmination of years of work, and I finally feel like it's all coming together. It's the first full mix I recorded with this all sorted out. Pun intended.

If you're a DJ that's been playing for a while, and have your technical skills down pat, spend some time thinking about your style. Do you like long, smooth mixes? Do you like quick energetic additions? What effects do you use? Then, sort your music - really, really sort your music. How can you group music together to work with your style? Cut out the fluff, focus in on what makes you you. Don't be afraid to throw out some stuff to help you focus more.

Next week, I'll share with you the first step into exploring this sound, a recording of a mix from tracks that I picked specifically for this style. I'll also share some thoughts about how I honed in on a sound beyond just a groove.
