A Shoegaze pop tune about suicide you can dance to? Why yes, Belladonna is a nice sing-a-long song about questions about whether those suicidal thoughts are hereditary or if you’re just depressed because you’ve seen your parent not wanting to live anymore. About not feeling that you’re worthy of love. And what a banger it is! 
The first single by Spunsugar that showcases the singing chops of bass player Felix, who sings in unison with lead singer Elin in the chorus. Keep your ear out for the parts where all three members are singing at the same time. The closest to Beach Boys Spunsugar has ever been.

Our heads have been up our asses for some time: we compete for who has the greener lawn, better partner, better car, the more popular friends. 

We hate perfectly-friendly people based on just one of their political views. 

We judge our friends online and feel bad when they have success. 

So how do we get our priorities back on track? 

“What Are We Smoking? We can become fully aware of stupid societal pressures that keep us on the hamster wheel. 

Society tricks you into wanting things you don’t need. It’s that dopamine rush you get from buying a new coffee-maker on Amazon, or getting more likes on that post about your breakfast, or showing the world how many points your kid scored in the 7th grade semifinal. 
Keeping score off the court is bad. 

It’s not about how much we produce, it’s about the quality of our production.

It’s not about what you do online as much as what you do in real life. 
Digital friends are just 1’s and 0’s in a code. Real friends come to your bon fire and provide free therapy.
 
The big question is...what do we really want?

In the meantime, we gotta ask ourselves, “what are we smoking?”

A revival of 90’s alternative, Wisconsin's off-kilter rock outfit NEWSKI enlists a friend/musical influence on every track for their new LP Friend Rock. From veterans like Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Brian Vander Ark (the Verve Pipe), Ryan Miller (Guster), Miles Nielsen, and Scott Terry (Red Wanting Blue) to overseas acts like H Burns (France), The Secret Beach (Canada), and The Shabs (South Africa), NEWSKI compiles an internationally collaborative album from his own tiny house in Wisconsin.  
The durable three-piece will hit American, European and South African highways for a 100 date touring year behind the new LP. Featuring Steve "Mr Bicep" Vorass on drums, Sean "Tubs" Anderson on 4-string & Brett Newski on guitars and vocals. 
 
NEWSKI has played with Pixies, Violent Femmes, Courtney Barnett, Gin Blossoms, Manchester Orchestra, Better than Ezra, Barenaked Ladies, & Nada Surf and has been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, American Songwriter, SiriusXM, Boston Globe, NBC, Billboard and SPIN.

More on FRIEND ROCK: We are nothing without our friends.

“Most of my friends I started with in music have since retired, which makes me feel like the world has turned and left me here. Collaborating with fellow “musician lifers” on this album made me feel less lonely and insane,” explains Newski. “It’s been neat to become pals with musical heroes from childhood.”

Some of the connections on Friend Rock were made during NEWSKI’s podcast “Dirt from the Road”, where guest musicians would have a laugh about their worst moments on the road.  
Social science research shows community and friendship are consistent common denominators in the happiest countries in the world. Belonging to the right tribe is a catalyst to health and longevity. Friend Rock is an ode to the power of community.  
A good friend is hard to find. So when you find those rare gems, you gotta keep them in your life.

About the song/video: NEWSKI enlists one of his biggest musical influences, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf for call-and-answer lead vocals. “Chemicals” is a hard-driving indie-pop smasher that illuminates how love can be the strongest vice. 

The VHS style video time-travels NEWSKI into the past, where he punches Hitler, partying at Woodstock, joining the band Queen, and getting tracked by the CIA in the JFK debacle.
