In honor of releasing our 40th live mix from our Desert Hearts Festival, we couldn't be happier to share with you the most talked about set in the history of DH. Everything we knew about live House & Techno was completely blown away during this set as Rodriguez Jr. gave us the performance of a life time. Described by him as "One of the best parties he's ever played", the vibe was on another level, the music was through the roof, and his performance had everyone in a musical frenzy. We all had a feeling that Rodriguez Jr. was going to be the highlight of our Desert Hearts Spring Festival, but we had no idea that he was about to set the bar for every DJ & Performer at our festival moving forward. Live @ Desert Hearts - Rodriguez Jr. - 040

Rrose—named after Marcel Duchamp's character, Rrose Selavey—is a dark and mysterious figure who makes dark and mysterious music. It comes mainly on his own Eaux label after early forays on the influential Sandwell District, and it combines mean and heavy overtones with more lithe and agile synths work. Most recently this American producer and live act served up an absorbing album of droning soundscapes on Seattle’s Further Records, whilst 2015’s EP output has seen him master supple techno forms drenched in reverb and soot black atmospheres.   This deep, thick and industrially influenced sound carries over in to his live set, and that is exactly what we are serving up for you on our next podcast. 

This one hour session is an absorbing one that sucks you deep down a blackened rabbit hole. It is one that recreates his show at this year's Dekmantel Festival and across the course of an hour invites your mind to get lost in elongated synth lines that slowly drift about like planets in orbit. Occasional percussive patterns and crunchy textures get loosely scattered across the airwaves and along the way the brooding clouds break to let in some blissful rays of optimism. There are few who have a sound as focussed and singular as this, as this podcast proves.

DJ Shiva brings her Noncompliant alias to Valence in March 2017 with the More Than Surviving EP. Described by longtime friend & fan The Black Madonna as "one of the most exciting producers in techno", Shiva's Noncompliant alias is as defiant in sound as it is in name. 

Leading with the title track, which featured in The Black Madonna's Mixmag cover mix in January 2017, the EP features two more original tracks, informed by Alan Moore's V For Vendetta and poet Adrienne Rich respectively. Valence label head Kevin McHugh completes the package with an Ambivalent remix.

"Noncompliant is about daring to be who you are instead of who others expect you to be, even when (and maybe especially when) being yourself is dangerous. It is a name and a project very much based in queerness and feminism, and though I started the project last year, it has become even more relevant to me now that we are living in the Trump regime. 

"More Than Surviving is about how we live in times of crisis. We have to find joy and love and goodness even when we are fighting to survive. In fact, sometimes those are the things that keep us fighting, that make it worth fighting in the first place. 

"The Very Last Inch of Us is based on a quote from V for Vendetta: 'Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us. But within that inch we are free.' Once again, being true to ourselves is sometimes all we have, and it's worth fighting for. 

"More Howl, More Keening is from an Adrienne Rich poem about death. We all will deal with loss, both in the fights we have and also of the people we love. When we lose either, we have to approach it with as much passion as we do living."
