Dark Heart Disco is a sonic exploration of Dark Disco, Industrial, Synthpop, Italo Disco, EBM, and New Beat in the format and context of rave music by Serious Soul resident djs Brian Busto and Rat Galactic.

This mix is a sneak peek into what a later hour mixed by Busto may sound like. All these tracks have been played at previous DHD nights. 

Dark Heart Disco takes place at The Catacombs in Tampa every 4th Thursday of the month from 7pm-1am.

So, for my Bday / Thanksgiving 2023 mix i decided to pull some tracks from my classics folder that have provided me great dancefloor memories both at the club and the afterhours. They range from the early 90s to 2009 with some heavy plays during the Simons era and beyond. I included some vinyl rips which give it a bit of a raw feel throughout and a heavy dose of beat mixing so hope you enjoy it.

A product of the 80’s San Francisco dance music boom, DJ/Producer Doc Martin has been creating innovative, high-energy electronic music for nearly three decades. Once a mainstay on the Pacific Northwest scene, he has gone on to perform everywhere from Ibiza to Tokyo, London, and beyond, creating an enduring body of work in the process. Now, as he enters a new phase of his career, Doc shows no signs of slowing down, as he continues to evolve, revealing new sides of his artistry as he releases the most compelling music of his career.

Doc Martin’s choice to pursue a career in music was an obvious one, given the musical family he grew up in. Most notably, his mother sang with Bay Area icons Jefferson Starship.Doc, however, was more interested in absorbing the various electronic subcultures that were emerging around the country. Endless hours spent in SF’s indie record stores armed him with an expertise in everything from acid house to techno, as he developed the genre-bending style that would come to define his career.

Within a few years of his first performance, Doc was selling out shows across his hometown and began setting his sights on bigger things. In the early ’90s, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he quickly integrated himself into the city’s thriving rave scene. Not long after, his profile had risen enough for him to be invited to Europe to play at some of the continent’s most iconic clubs and parties, including Fabric (Residency), Circoloco, The Rex, Panorama Bar, and Sun waves to name a few, In the ensuing decades, he became a favorite amongst audiences from New York to London, performing regularly at clubs including Output, Coachella, The Roxy, Twilo, City Fox, Space, Desert Hearts, Movement, and Lightning In A Bottle.

After three decades of bringing people together with music, Doc Martin’s passion and drive remain as strong as ever. He maintains a steady schedule of performances across the globe while continuing to release new tracks regularly. As the rare artist to achieve the status of elder statesman, he has left a lasting legacy in electronic music, a legacy which he continues to add to every day.

Catch the magic of LA rave icons @Thee-O and @Ben-Annand in an unplanned b2b set at the Tropikroma Campout in Santa Clarita in August 2023!

This outdoor event survived a location shift the week of the party and crazy weather brought in by hurricane Hilary that canceled every other event, leaving Tropkroma as the last event standing.

The night was an homage to perseverance among the three organizers collaborating on the event - Tropical, Terrakroma, and The Gathering, ChinoSound who provided crystal clear Danley sound, and the 100 or so die-hard dancers that braved the first ever hurricane to hit LA - in August no less - and dance at this magical event in the trees.

Because we knew that rains would come in heavily in the late morning we made some shifts in the schedule.  Most notable was to move Thee-O's morning set into a combined nighttime back to back set with Ben Annand.

Thee-O is one of the most prolific LA DJs of all time, possibly playing the most total sets of any LA underground DJ from the 90s til now.  Ben also has an impressive DJ resume in addition to being the founder and vision behind Tropical, one of LA's most consistent, well-known and well-loved little underground events :)

There is no shortage of history between these two iconic LA underground warriors... At Ben's very first LA DJ gig for an outside promoter in 1996, he opened for Thee-O at Hollywood's infamous Gotham Club.  Ben DJed as Mr. Annand back then and is listed as such on the title for sake of nostalgia :)

The two have played together frequently since, and Thee-O has been a featured guest at Tropical parties in California, Oregon, and Hawaii.

Note how this set flows almost perfectly through a variety of styles between the 2 DJs switching every 4 tracks.  Hopefully this unexpected collaboration between Thee-O and Ben Annand will not be the last!

This is one of my best set recordings so how come I never released it?  

Only because I had released a set with similar vibes right before playing. 

This was a really fun winter party - in fact I had a rather sketchy drive home to Eugene in a snowstorm...

Been meaning to put this one out there for a while.  In 2024, I'm dedicated to putting out more mixes so here ya go!

Tampa Bay native and a DJ since the 90’s, Brian Busto has worked for the last 29 years to keep the flames of the underground alive for the most Serious of Souls in the Tampa Bay area. Since he fell in love with dance music on one fateful night at SIMONS over three decades ago, Brian has never looked back. Busto first started DJing in 1994 with his first residency coming a year later at Beanjuice. A queer run late night haven for the house heads, ravers and weirdos of the Tampa Bay area. From Beanjuice, Busto went on to earn his first residency at The Castle courtyard in 1996 along with starting his second afterhours in 1997, Silver Meteor. From there Brian Busto went on to curate legendary nights in revered Tampa venues such as Rain Lounge, Malios, Bahassa, Ceviche, Hyde Park Cafe, Iberian Rooster, and The Castle. Wherever the location, Busto remains on the front lines, pushing cutting edge new music, ignoring trends, and always staying true to his roots. 

Brian Busto is a genre-defying DJ that loves to dig. You’re always going to get something unique, from tough cutz loaded with swagger to hypnotic rhythms that lift you right off the floor.
