Pillars cracking

It started as a joke ended in tears

Eschaton Blues

In 1999, Michael Zapruder wrote, recorded and posted one song each week for a year. This experimental project was called 52 Songs and though posting content on a weekly basis sounds commonplace today, this approach was unheard of at the time. People were buying CD’s. Soundcloud didn’t exist. YouTube was years away and digital releases were difficult to imagine. The logistics of posting songs online were arcane and writing and recording a good song was as difficult as it’s always been.

In Zapruder’s words: “The project was about songs, themselves a medium that I’ve always been motivated to deconstruct and explore. After the project ended, I recorded my first solo record, This is a Beautiful Town, and I never released any of the tracks from 52 Songs. Now that it’s been twenty years, t feel like enough time has passed and I have done enough work for these songs to see the light of day. The first one is called Still Life with Trains; I still play this song at shows. I hope you like it.”
