Maya Q (@mxyi) releases her debut EP for Scuffed Recordings, weaving together her own unique take on influences from across the UK dance music spectrum. The New England-born, London-based DJ and producer has been building momentum throughout 2021, both with her productions and as a resident of the Co-Select collective. 

The ‘Spiral’ EP follows Maya’s appearance on the Scuffed Presents 005 compilation in early 2021 with her track ‘Belief’, which saw support from Jaguar and Jess Iszatt on BBC Introducing, among others. 

Since then, Maya released her ‘I Just Wanna’ EP through DJ Pitch and Simkin’s All Centre label, which further established her esoteric production style and her place as an artist to watch in the UK’s electronic music scene. 

On the EP’s title track, Maya comes straight out of the blocks with a jungle-inspired warper that pairs heavyweight bass with an unearthly melody and frantic breaks.

The GAB mix series is back for another year! And who better to kick things off than the King of Electro, Shawn Cartier. 

Over the last year, Shawn’s prolific output, both in terms of production and DJing, has allowed him to ascend rapidly through the contemporary electro scene. With releases on Carouse, Mind Controlled Rectifier, Paradiso Records, Haŵs, Bogoture Records, Kouncil Cuts, Reality Club, Night Service, Nasty Enterprises and of course two physicals on childsplay, Shawn seems simply unstoppable. Somehow, he’s also managed to find the time to guest on Rinse, Kindred, Balamii, Ape-X, Threads, Action Replay Codes and many other platforms. 

Kicking off GAB MIX 051 with a trance groover, Shawn dips into his UKG and breaks bag, taking a turn towards more experimental club sounds towards the half-way mark. Things quickly turn gritty as Shawn expertly blends his own unreleased acid belters with euphoric squelchers from Popmix and breakbeats from Sansibar and Detroit’s Filthiest.

With his first EP, Nice1Tom takes us back in time to 1992, letting loose in the middle of Donnington Park. This EP reflects the sounds that brought the hardcore scene to life but deeply ties in a new, innovative take that provides a refreshing soundscape, ready to tear down any dancefloor.

Special Blends would also like to say a huge thank you to Frankie Waugh for encapsulating the 90s oldskool rave scene in the artwork, tying it in with the maximalist essence of this EP.
