AMPERSAND is an ensemble of flexible proportions, loosely based in Central Vermont.

Bridge is a professional vocal chamber ensemble specializing in new music and works from the Renaissance and Middle Ages. Led by Artistic Directors Gilbert Spencer, Crossley Hawn, Allan Laino, and Jacob Perry Jr., Bridge is a collective of top Baltimore and Washington-based professional singers who come together to create new works of music for voices through commissioning projects with some of the world’s leading composers, and present them in concert alongside rarely heard masterpieces from the Renaissance and Middle Ages. The ensemble bridges this gap of several centuries, and aims to create innovative and engaging programs that will challenge the rhetoric of “classical performance” in the 21st Century.

Bridge is also thoroughly dedicated to its home city of Baltimore. Their dedication to working with local artists helps to ensure that the Baltimore arts economy continues to thrive, and significant efforts are made to see that performances are held in geographically diverse locations in the area. The uniquely creative
and DIY attitude that Baltimore has come to be known for is one that the ensemble hopes to mirror in its efforts to present the world’s oldest musical traditions in innovative ways that
resonate with its local conscience.

In 2018-2019, the ensemble worked with Composer-in-Residence
Jenny Olivia Johnson and presented several world premieres alongside over a
dozen regional and national premiere performances of works by living
composers. Their artists worked with leading arts advocacy and outreach
organizations in a new educational scheme designed to give children
tangible examples of the benefits to studying music seriously. Most
importantly, they are one of the strongest advocates in Baltimore and
the Nation for the creation and presentation of new works of music for
voices. They continue to seek to challenge the notion that “classical music
is dead” by giving performances of works that respond directly to our modern lives and the issues we face in society by composers who are very much still alive and creating music for our time. Bridge’s sound is timeless, but the music they make is truly modern and cutting-edge.

As a jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s arts scene, Truro Cathedral Choir broadcasts regularly on television and radio, presents concerts throughout the year, and records for the acclaimed record label Regent.

The choir dates back to the 1880s when services took place in a wooden shed whilst John Loughborough Pearson’s magnificent Gothic Revival cathedral was still under construction.

Today, the choir consists of eighteen boy choristers, eighteen girl choristers, and twelve adult professional singers. All organise their lives around the choir’s busy schedule of commitments which has at its heart seven sung services each week during term time.

Barbara is a GRAMMY-winning ensemble member and vocal soloist performing the music of the Middle Ages through the present era.

As a soloist, she has appeared with Masterworks Chorale, Musica Sacra, The Boston Cecilia, Seven Times Salt, 7 Hills Renaissance Wind Band, and Long & Away: A Consort of Viols. As an ensemble member, she performs with the GRAMMY-winning ensemble The Crossing (Philadelphia, PA), Emmanuel Music (Boston, MA),  Meravelha Medieval Ensemble (Boston, MA),  Red Shift (Baton Rouge, LA),  Ensemble Altera (Providence, RI)  and Cappella Clausura (Boston, MA), among others. 

She also appears regularly with many of the choirs of religious institutions around Boston; to include Church of the Advent, Church of the Redeemer,  and King’s Chapel. Barbara is the soprano cantor at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

An enthusiastic supporter of new music, she especially enjoys the opportunity to premiere and record new works. Highlights include recording Gavin Bryars: The Fifth Century (2018 GRAMMY Award for Best Choral Performance), as well as performing the world premieres of  Julia Wolfe’s “Fire in my mouth” (with the NY Philharmonic and The Crossing, 2019), Karl Henning's From the Pit of a Cave in the Cloud (2015), and Kile Smith’s The Consolation of Apollo (with The Crossing, 2014).

In addition to performing, Barbara serves on the board of the Society for Historically Informed Performance (SoHIP) in Boston and helps to produce their annual summer concert series. She is also the executive director of Meravelha.

Barbara is a member of Beyond Artists, a coalition of artists that donates a percentage of their concert fee to organizations they care about. Barbara supports the ACLU, the Pope Memorial Humane Society, and 350.org.

The Crossing is a Grammy Award-winning professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally and dedicated to new music. It is committed to working with creative teams to make and record new, substantial works for choir – most often addressing social issues – with the possibility of changing the way we think about writing for choir, singing in choir, and listening to music for choir. Many of its over seventy commissioned premieres address social, environmental, and political issues.

Highly sought-after for collaborative projects, The Crossing’s first such partnership was as the resident choir of the Spoleto Festival in Italy, in 2007. Since then, collaborators include the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), American Composers Orchestra, Network for New Music, Lyric Fest, PRISM Saxophone Quartet, Beth Morrison Projects, Pig Iron Theatre Company, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Park Avenue Armory, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Mostly Mozart Festival, National Gallery of Art, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum, Institute for Advanced Study, Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust, and Northwestern University. The Crossing holds an annual residency at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in Big Sky, Montana. 

With a commitment to recording its commissions, The Crossing has issued 15 releases, receiving two Grammy Awards and three nominations in as many years. The Crossing, with Donald Nally, is the American Composers Forum’s 2017 Champion of New Music. They are the recipients of the 2015 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, three ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming, and the Dale Warland Singers Commission Award from Chorus America.
