Organically grown in Barrie, Ontario, Shanti & Vale bloomed surrounded by a wide, wondrous variety of musical genres and styles. This slowly sculpted the music-genre-tangle that now cradles the music they write: ethereal psychedelic-folk. 

As a result of spending so much time together throughout their childhoods, Shanti and Vale Abbott often create separately before fusing their music into its unique, sister-spattered medley. Luckily the petty rivalry that often accompanies being constantly mistaken for “the other twin” doesn’t spill into their musical makings, and their voices still dance in a reciprocal manor. Shanti & Vale’s harmonies are soothing, spiraling and pair nicely with their dreamy melodies.

The two are influenced primarily by the sounds of Justin Vernon, Kathleen Edwards, and Feist, but take from these influences differently, allowing diversity within their music.

Shanti & Vale have performed at Barrie local venues such as the Clarkson Pub, the DIY Arts Collective and The MacLaren Arts Centre. Since moving to Toronto in the fall, the duo has performed with, and opened for bands such as Hungry Lake, Autopilot, Stonetrotter, A Fellow Ship and Bekah vs. Missy at venues including The Cavern, The Central and The Smiling Buddha. 

Outside of Shanti & Vale, the twins are both members of House Art Collective, another Barrie-born band, made up of their closest hometown friends. 

For now, Shanti & Vale are being rocked by big city vastness, while steadily developing new sounds to add to the collection they’re framing.

After years of self-discovery, time together and time apart; the sounds emerging from House Art Collective are eclectic, reminiscent, and personal. Drawing on influences such as Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, and Justin Vernon – the band combines ambient rock, indie-pop, and post punk attitudes that expand and collapse with each breath and pulse of their energetic live show. Heavily focusing on the stories and memories of young life, House Art Collective’s presence is one you must see to understand.

With roots in church choir harmonies and songwriting prowess built on an art-rock adolescence, it’s not so surprising that Rebekah Hawker ultimately found herself at the intersection of country and folk. Hawker embraces the full spectrum of "country,"—from John Prine's lore-spinning to Linda Ronstadt's honeyed vocals, Kacey Musgraves' resilient sheen, and the vulnerability of Edwards. 

In 2020 Rebekah’s song ‘Catch You’ won Folk Music Ontario’s Songs from the Heart award and in 2022 she was selected as an official showcasing artist at their annual conference. She was recently selected as a participant in the 2023 RBC x Launchpad Music Entrepreneurship Program.
