Het boek gaat dus alleen om Urbain en omschrijft zijn zware leven. In zijn jeugd leefde hij armoedig en zijn vader stierf op jonge leeftijd. Zijn moeder moest hierdoor tegen haar wil opnieuw trouwen met haar buurman Henri waarmee Urbain een slechte relatie had. De titel oorlog en terpentijn komt dus voort uit zijn ervaringen in de Grote oorlog en zijn liefde voor kunst.


Oorlog en terpentijn, geschreven door Stefan Hertmans is een bijzonder mooi geschreven boek. Dit boek is kort samengevat een eerbetoon aan zijn grootvader die een moeilijk leven heeft gehad voor, tijdens en na de oorlog. De roman bestaat uit 3 grote delen, deel 1 speelt zich af voor de oorlog, deel 2 tijdens de oorlog en deel 3, na de oorlog. Oorlog en terpentijn gaat in zijn geheel over de grootvader van Stefan Hertmans, Urbain Martien. Urbain overhandigt Stefan in het begin van het boek 3 schriftjes waarin al zijn belevenissen voor, tijdens en na de oorlog in worden beschreven. De belevenissen worden door Stefan verteld maar soms kunnen we meekijken in het hoofd van zijn grootvader wat voor veel variatie zorgt. De protagonist van het verhaal was Urbain Martien maar er waren ook antagonisten en dit waren namelijk zijn verloofde Maria Emillie en zijn vrouw Gabriëlla. Het woord oorlog in de titel staat eigenlijk voor heel het boek en terpentijn is een verwijzing naar de passie voor schilderen die zijn grootvader meekreeg van zijn vader. Ik vond Oorlog en terpentijn prachtig geschreven, het heeft mij geen seconde verveeld, ook al is het boek redelijk dik vind ik niet dat je daar naar moet kijken. Het is zeer vlot leesbaar. Stefan Hertmans is een geniale schrijver en ik zou zeker nog meer boeken van hem willen lezen. Het thema ligt nog steeds heel erg gevoelig, wat de roman nog zeer recent maakt. Er zijn ook veel verschillende romans geschreven over oorlog en ik heb er ook al een paar gelezen maar geen enkel boek komt dicht bij Oorlog en terpentijn. Ik vond deel 2 het meest schokkend van het hele verhaal, dit deel speelde af aan het front, ik vond dit ook het aangenaamst om te lezen omdat dit me interesseert en intrigeert.


Toch kan men zich afvragen in hoeverre het middenpaneel niet ook op het conto van Hertmans geschreven moet worden. Een interessante kwestie is namelijk de verhouding tussen de originele memoires in de schriften en de teksten zoals we die nu in Oorlog en terpentijn aantreffen. De oorlogsherinneringen die het tweede deel van het boek vormen zijn alvast zeker geen precieze transcriptie van de schrifttekst. Hertmans gaat in het begin vrij uitvoerig in op zijn werkwijze. Eerst beschrijft hij zeer gedetailleerd het materiële aspect van de schriften: het uiterlijk van de kaften en het papier, de kleur inkt, de finesses van het handschrift, de lijnen en de vlekken. Hij vertelt dan dat hij eerst de volledige tekst heeft overgetikt. Dat overtikken blijken we nochtans ruim op te moeten vatten:

Can anyone please help to explain to me this difference because i am struggling to find much information, as i see it Alias Studio is a more accurate modeller used for exporting models for CNC. While Maya is the animator used for digital content creation. I learned to use Alias Studiotools at Uni with no problems in modelling or rendering and am now trying to learn Maya because it is alot cheaper than Studio the problems i face are that i can model ok but i cant render at all. the methods seem different and i cant find any shaders for Maya, I read someone that Maya has a full shader library but i can barely find any other than the basics and even they wont render right. I know that I am only using the PLE at the moment but Unless I can work out whats going on i dont want to fork out for the whole package.
