This mix truly is something special to me. It is my personal finale of the winter indoor season 20/21. Obviously it wasn’t an indoor club season with gigs. For the most part it was an indoor isolation season in my own apartment. The restrictions due to the corona pandemic hit me hard on multiple levels. Until March 2020 a huge part of my self-employment, income, daily routines, friendships, relationships, purposes, meaning, goals and confirmation of what I am doing and consequently of who I am, was strongly based on my activities in the local bass music and creative scene. Within a couple of weeks, I basically was forced to reconsider my whole outlook on life, because the current conclusion is, that the things I do and value don’t hold up as a solid foundation during a social crisis, inevitably resulting in a personal crisis.

Sidenote: Of course I’m on the other hand really aware and thankfull for all the securities, possibilities and privileges that I still have, wich give me the freedom and position to be able to reassess my own structures. Seeing things in perspective keeps me humble and reminds me to stay solidaric with the ones who struggle harder than me.
 
One of the things I reflected a lot about was my DJing and how my approach and expectations towards it changed over the years. Almost fifteen years ago it started out as a an activity just for myself. Just dabbling and fucking around for fun and creating mixes and playlists to be able to listen to the stuff that I really love the most and not what the radio, charts, mtv etc was trying to force on me. So it was mixing music, just for the sake of mixing music. Over the years, I connected with a lot of people, who I looked up to, wich teached me a lot of stuff, helped me grow, pushed me and supported me (Big up all the crews and people at this point, you know who you are!). So I started to share my private little soundtrack with more and more live audiences and got addicted to that emotional rollercoaster that comes with that. Hype, endless hours of preparation, fear, self doubt, stage fright, euphoria, tension, relief, excess, trance, shared collective energy. And for some years, this rollercoaster seemed to became my main focus. One could say, that what started as pure escapism became the island I now was stranded on. Fast forward to winter 20/21 and I’m basically back to where it all started. In my own apartment. Digging through my collection and starting selections for gigs that will never happen, with tracks that I bought with the dance floor in mind, sometimes without any personal emotional connection anymore. Asking myself why and what I am doing this for. And slowly finding back to just do it for myself first. Just for the fucking around. Just for the fun of it. 

So I did a mix with some bits from the only 2-3 occasions that I could play last year, plus some old classics, some favorites, some brand new future classics, some tunes just for my & your living room dance floor, some just for my & your headphones whilst laying in bed trying to find the strength to get up.

It feels good doing something for myself. But of course it feels even better to be able to share this music and emotions with others. Hopefully some day in real life again. Together in front of a huge soundsystem. 

Until then, please look out for yourself and your close ones and ask them how they are doing.
Set your personal boundaries, but please also try to keep an eye on what unites us as humans.
Be solidaric with ones who struggle harder than you.
