Whether you’re floating free to antipodean ambience or toasting the sunset with a Baltic beauty, you can always count on Growing Bin to take you someplace new for a while. Swapping bucolic Poland for the buzz of the Big Apple, the Hamburg imprint reaches a magnificent seven in the company of synth-pop dreamer Shy Layers (JD Walsh to his mum) and his sublime self titled debut. Over the course of ten emotional pop serenades, the New York musician recalls lost days
sofa surfing to the lounge electronica of Air, Mellow and early Phoenix or the swooning lo-fi psychedelia of a pre-MD Simian.
Shy Layers welcomes us aboard with the shimmering pads and soothing soft synths of ‘Black & White’, a drifting soundtrack to a John Hughes-directed episode of ‘In The Night Garden’. From there we swerve into the wistful synth-pop of ‘Famous Faces’, locking into the rattling Tears For Fears groove while the West Coast guitar licks and vocoder vocals float off into the distance.
‘You Won’t Find Me’ shuffles through afro-tronic keyboard lines, Beta Band breakbeats and loose funk guitar before the sweltering ‘Stabilized Waves’ dips a toe in the Med, swaying gently to the fluid bass, acoustic strumming and cascading electric guitar. Swapping continents to close the A-side, ‘Too Far Out’ finds Walsh working highlife guitars and fuzzy sanza sequences into a piece of perfect off-kilter pop. The B-side begins in glitchy fashion with the flying hats and seesaw synths of ‘Holding It Back’, before ‘Playing The Game’ offers sprinklers over summer lawns, dub fx, jangling guitars and cooing vocals. The afrobeat influence shines through once again on the rhythmic ‘Bees & Bamboo’ before ‘SEG’ sees Shy Layers don Mario’s Red Wing cap for a chip-set safari through the bright blue sky. Playing us out with the same cinematic splendour with which we began, Walsh conjures a woozy, sun-dappled mood for the sumptuous ‘1977’. Fusing French pop, glistening Americana, 80s AOR and afrobeat into a hazy vision of balmy mornings, long evenings and lazy days, Shy Layers has served up the soundtrack to your summer. Considered by the band as their most fully realized statement, The Floating World is a snapshot of the last chapter of Wet Hair's tenure as central players in the Midwestern DIY experimental music scene. Wet Hair finished the year long writing and recording process fresh off an eventful West Coast tour with Merchandise right before all three members of the band decided to part ways with their longtime residence in Iowa City. The tracks were recorded and mixed at Flat Black Studios in Iowa City and were mastered by Carl Saff. Shawn Reed finished the striking jacket artwork in early 2017 -- a collage reflecting on the Japanese concept of ukiyo ("The Floating World") as it relates to a feeling of American suburban emptiness and longing.  



The Floating World is a kinetic collection of seven tracks that represent Wet Hair's most exciting, melodic and beautifully produced effort. On their follow up to Spill Into Atmosphere, Wet Hair revitalized their hybrid psych / krautrock / synth pop sound, masterfully working shimmering synth swells and fiery drum and bass grooves into pointed explorations of growth and texture. Working in a style that has traditionally drawn excitement from long sonic build-ups, Wet Hair keenly sculpt these jams so the electric musicality only highlights the pop vocal leads. Tracks like “Dear Danae” and “Revealing” revel in their allusion to noise-pop, offering up simple, ear worm melodies that shine in the frantic orchestration. “Endless Procession,” the record’s 8-minute long jaunt works through a haze of twittering synths toward the ultimate goal of full-blown catharsis and ensuing decay. Meanwhile, cuts like “Through The Night” and “Lift The Stone” show off Wet Hair’s rock-solid rhythm section as they syncopate and shred support for crunchy synth melodies.

Hercules & Love Affair return to the fray with Controller, a pulsing, propulsive new song that signals the first salvo from their long-awaited new album. Featuring The Horrors’ Faris Badwan on vocals, it takes the Hercules’ disco-house heritage and fuses it with starker more experimental stylings.

A taster both sonically and aesthetically of the new album, 'Controller' connects new wave, post-punk and 80s electro within the clubland realm of Hercules & Love Affair. Hearing the The Horrors’ live version of Frankie Knuckles & Jamie Principle’s ‘Your Love’, Andy realised he’d found a rock artist willing to engage with dance culture's history.  With its underbelly of seamy ‘80s electro-pop, Controller’s sub-dom, master-and-servant roleplay in the lyrics work perfectly with Faris vocals delivery creating something rather special.

These are turbulent times we’re living in. Sure, you can have someone ride a burrito to your house in a matter of minutes or use the internet to speak to anyone basically anywhere, but you only have to catch the smallest snippet of news to get the sense we’re rolling downhill with the brake chords cut. Washington punks, The Sea Life know this all too well. Their self titled album is full to the brim with themes of disillusionment and self-awareness, while still infused with a real push for something, anything better. The second single to be taken from the self titled debut is Blame, a fuzzy pop masterpiece that sounds like The National getting drunk with Pinegrove.

The album is set to be co-released on 12" by Art is Hard in the UK and Babe City Records in the US, both on May 26th.
