Living in humble awe of the power of digital sound

Astrophysical Maser is an electronic music composer and visual artist. James began his musical education early in life, his passion quickly became focused on electronic dance music starting in 2005. Since first using a DAW in 2009, he has used it as his primary method of creative expression.

Writing much of his music with keyboard and mouse, he also performs live with the aid of various midi-controllers, which have become an important asset to his process. His more recent work has been described as “the most exciting new sound to come out of Australia in a long time” by scene veteran Phil Smart.

James’ ventures in electronic music stray wider than what is common. He has a practice in Ambient, where he tries to simulate environments in the near vicinity of extreme astrophysical objects – quasars, black holes etc. For Techno and House he explores blending environmental audio into stimulating and powerful music that challenges the dance music world.

Ladyslug are multi-dimensional freaks. They roll in the realm of nu-jazz, navigating between the chaos and calm of their monstrous tunes. 

Their songs are collisions of an explosive vocal palette, lyrics laden in ironic hyperbole, polyrhythmic keys and high-functioning harmony, held down by a phat rhythm section fascinated with quintuplets. 

Their guerrilla musicianship and creative prowess are makin’ waves along the Australian east coast, seeing Ladyslug play Falls Festival Byron Bay in 17/18. 

Sprung from the loins of the Northern NSW in 2016, the band made their international debut at Gig on The Green, at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in August 2017, alongside Australian heavy-weights, Vallis Alps. 

Ladyslug live performances are fire. Kodi blazes as front woman on an island of her own making at the fore, voice rising, crashing, entrancing and confronting. Lachy Dwyer often sweats life into the kit alongside killer keys solos, bass grooves and recent addition, electric guitar and synth. 

Playing Falls Fest, Mullum Music Fest, Bello Winter Music Fest, and bangin’ local shows in Australia, Ladyslug is poised to pounce.

Before my life as a record company I was a concert promoter and had the good fortune of promoting artist such as Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Fugazi, Pavement, Sonic Youth Pearl Jam, My Bloody Valentine, Hole, Bikini Kill, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs , LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and hundreds of others across Australia and New Zealand.

I created The Summersault festival in Australia and an island festival in Croatia called For Festival and curated/creative directed events in Australia like Vivid Live 2011 and most recently the UNPOPULAR  exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum.
