When people think of Switzerland, they think of green meadows, clear water, snow-covered mountaintops and fresh air. In the world of electronic music they think of soulful house music and an extensive clubbing past. It is in both of these environments that Marco Biagini aka KELLERKIND grew up. In the small and rural town of Solothurn KELLERKIND discovered the Chicago sound in the local clubs and became fully infected with the virus of house music. 15 years later, KELLERKIND has become an irreplaceable figure in the Swiss electronic music scene. Backflash: In the beginning, it wasn’t much more than just fun. Now though, it is a true passion. After many nights spent on the dance-floor of Solothurn’s Nacht-Schicht, KELLERKIND started to DJ himself – at first in his bedroom and soon in the clubs in and around his hometown. Warm deep house and the soulful music of Chicago were his biggest influences then and still remain to be the backbone to his sets. Very quickly KELLERKIND starts to DJ out in Switzerland’s big clubs. By 2007 Marco has already played the country’s most important venues, be it Zurich’s Hive, Rohstofflager, Rote Fabrik, Zukunft or Bern’s Formbar.

His career, however, really kicks off with his first release ‘Bergluft’ in 2008. His name, which translates as ‘basement child’, can be taken quite literal, as he spends hours creating and arranging his warm house sounds in his basement studio in Solothurn. In 2007, KELLERKIND meets the guys behind Swiss house imprint Sirion Recordings and in 2008 he releases ‘Bergluft’, a track that gets worldwide feedback. It is played out by many famous DJs, charts at number 5 of Beatport’s minimal section and even gets airtime on John Digweed’s UK radio show on Kiss100. After the sterling debut things happen quickly: Florian Meindl releases the Keller EP on his label Flash Recordings, of which the tracks ‘Natural Juice’ and ‘TomTom’ list highly in various techno charts. Later the tracks are re-released on vinyl as part of the Don’t Go Home EP, which does well with record retailers such as decks.de. In 2009, KELLERKIND’s working-relationship with Oliver Koletzki develops as he is asked to produce a remix for Koletzki’s ‘Since you are gone’. Since then he has released a shared EP on Stil vor Talent with Niko Schwind – an homage to classic house music – and has been featured on the Swiss Edition EP in 2010. More recently, his Groovebox EP was released on Flash to critical acclaim and another collaboration with Niko Schwind appeared on Light my Fire. While the spring of last year saw KELLERKIND’s first full length. Basement Story, his Backflash EP on Stil vor Talent has been the career defining moment thus far: hitting the zeitgeist perfectly, it reigned the Beatport Deep House charts at number one for weeks. Now, not even two years later, his second album Music is a Miracle is about to become another big success story.

Simultaneously, KELLERKIND’s DJ career has taken a sharp turn: he masters the decks at Berlin’s famous Watergate every other month, holds a residency at Hive in Zurich and jets to international venues in Paris, Amsterdam or Istanbul regularly. While channeling the energy of the club in his records, KELLERKIND enjoys the contrast between weekend and weekday: he produces his tracks in a small wooden hut tucked away deep in the Swiss countryside. It is here that his warm and soulful tracks are borne and he gets the chance to replenish his batteries for those long weekends ahead. “Most of my inspiration still comes from the time spent in clubs”, he states, a fact that is confirmed by his DJ sets and productions. “Music, for me, is everything – it’s a miracle”.

Es gibt so Dinge, die geschehen einfach. Da kannst du noch so im Vogelnest hocken und Ausschau halten, da kannst du noch so am (Steuer-)rad drehen und das Schiff hin und her wenden, wenn die Zeit da ist, passiert es einfach. Da klopft dann eine Flaschenpost an den Rumpf und nach dem Öffnen entwickelt sich ein feiner Gesprächsverlauf. 

Es gibt sie, die kleinen vielen Geister, welche in den unendlichen Weiten des matrixartigen Ozean der Daten umherschippern. https://soundcloud.com/schmovsky ist so ein kleiner feiner Geist. Wir lernten uns durch das gegenseitige Hören unserer Mixsets kennen und traten in eben jenen erwähnten und somit völlig unverhofften Schriftverkehr - ich mag sein Understatement und seine Liebe zu deepen Sounds. Er ist kein Dj, wie viele von den Anderen in dieser Reihe hier, das macht es auch um so angenehmer, hat seinen Reiz und vor allem, so ist sein Mix völlig vorurteilsfrei zu genießen. Der Mix ist wie angeschwemmtes Strandgut, er überrascht, er hält kleine Juwelen bereit und hat eben auch seine kleinen dreckigen Ecken. Für euren Käpt’n eine wundervolle Bereicherung und vor allem eine Öffnung hin zu völlig unbekannten Talenten. Eine Talent, wo man sich wünscht, das dessen Sichtweise auf die Musik noch mehr Gehör finden sollte und doch auch wieder nicht, denn genau darin liegt die verborgene Kraft und Magie - das was im Verborgenen liegt, das bleibt Nische und sich dabei wohl am meisten treu - frei von jeglichem Druck. Frei solltet ihr euch beim Hören des Mixsets ebenfalls fühlen und darum schicken wir euch jetzt auf die Reise.

EloQuence genannt „Elo“ ist ein Schwarzwaldjunge mit Hang zu elektronischer Musik, fernab jeglicher frühkindlicher Musikerziehung, vorgeschriebener Normen und wirtschaftlich definierter Genregrenzen. 
Musikalisch verbindet er Techno, House, Rave mit einem Hauch Selbstironie und beschallt damit seine idyllische Heimatstadt Freiburg mit seinem ganz eigenen Verständnis der elektronischen Tonkunst. 

Außerdem ist Eloquence seit September 2014 „Papa“ und Booker des Freiburger Innenstadtklubs BalzBambii​ 'eine Jagdwirtschaftlichetechnoklause' wodurch er täglich inmitten der Szene arbeitet und sich kreativ auslebt.

'Backflash' – as the title of Kellerkind's new EP on Stil vor Talent rightly suggests – is a full-blown blast from the past that utilises 80s aesthetics in order to craft a wonderfully contemporary EP much in vain of the en vogue sound of 2011: slow, forceful goovers with basslines so big, they might just crush you. Nothing less was to be expected of the charismatic Swiss producer Marco Biagini who has already proven his wide-ranging understanding of house music with tracks like 'Länzer is a Dänzer' or 'Groovebox'. 
On the A-side, the title track works around a delicately crafted, vintage Miami synth lead: while it naturally provides 'Backflash' with a nostalgic touch, its mellow qualities are lifted by a dangerously obese bassline and devilishly catchy hook. Add Kellerkind's impressive ear for groove and vocal sampling, and you're on to an absolute winner. Moving on, Niko Schwind's remix of 'Backflash' subtly shifts the original’s elements around while extending on its vocal sample – a soulful voice urges the listener to 'get it right'. When the break introduces Schwind's trademark piano keys and shuffling rhythmic structures, it's clear that the SVT stalwart is once again on target here. 
Kellerkind continues to explore the vintage theme on the B-side with 'Disco Light', whose laser synths, mesmerising bleeps and chugging bass might just catapult you back to Paradise Garage in '78, were it not for the track's classicist house percussion. Finally, 'Down To' brings the fun back to the dancefloor as Kellerkind's own deep vocal hums serve to replace a traditional bassline. Underlined by yet another beguiling synth motif, ‘Down To’ concludes this stunningly retro-futuristic EP, which is both, sonically coherent and viciously enjoyable. A brilliant start to 2012!

HYBRID LIFE PODCAST 013 - DEETRON

Swiss star Deetron is unquestionably one of the more talented DJs of his age. His resolute commitment to beat mixing stems from his days as a hip-hop DJ, when scratching was all that mattered to the young Sam Geiser. However it wasn’t long before Todd Terry got him into dance music, and then the music of Detroit heroes like Carl Craig and Jeff Mills would help define the sound that makes Deetron the star he is today.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of his relationship with the legendary Belgian label Music Man, however throughout this time his sound has continued to evolve, becoming much more musical of late, and with a greater use of vocals. On his ‘Each Step’ single with Seth Troxler on Circus Company last year, the title track goes on a trip into the en vogue Chicago excursions of 2010, whilst the B side ‘Sing’ is a deeper groove led percussive number.

Ultimately, it all starts and finishes on the decks with Deetron, where despite road testing the first ever Final Scratch he is still a steadfast vinyl and CD man. Ahead of set at Fabric in London this Saturday night alongside Agoria, Sandwell District and Sascha Dive he has put together this exclusive HYBRIDLIFE podcast, where he not only shows off the full range of his deck wizardry but also gives us a glimpse of the depth and range of sounds that are inspiring him today, from Joy Orbison and Brothers Vibe to Maya Jane Coles and Paperclip People.
