Synthetes EP is the long-awaited new release from Mr. Beatnick. In development for over a year, it plots a fresh trajectory from hip hop to house to disco. The title track drives forward with bass and strings, “Don’t Walk Away…” weaves keys and vocal snips into a fine tapestry, “Casio Romance” is slower and contemplative, while Architeq imparts his own switching breakbeats to Synthetes in conclusion.  The EP has already received plays from Gilles Peterson on his Radio 1 Worldwide show (twice in consecutive weeks), from Braiden on Rinse FM and from Darksky on NTS. 

Mr Beatnick has been one of the most vocal plaudits behind the burgeoning beats scene which has produced artists like Bullion and Paul White. Listen to his own tracks though like I Know All The Bitches (Altered Vibes) and Diving For Pearls and you can hear the influence of whole generations of music from Mantronix to the 90's Bay Area scene via Photek, DJ Krush and Dilla. An unsung hero of many genres, and guaranteed to move the dancefloor in new and unexplored ways.

PURPLE

Tafsiri is the Swahili (Kenyan lingua franca) word for translation and interpretation in the linguistic and lyrical sense. Sauntering down the trail blazed by Theo Parrish – who reworked ‘Wires’ with signature swagger – is another kindred spirit and Worldwide heavyweight – Quantic – who nudges ‘Doyoi Nyajo Nam’ firmly, but sensitively, towards club dancefloors via a monstrous Afro-funky groove packing XXL drums and rib-rattling bass. The original Owiny jam has become a Worldwide favourite… Quantic’s rerub ups its status to “Summer Festival Anthem”.

The flip sees Owiny Sigoma Band co-founders Jesse Hackett (keys) and Tom Skinner (drums) tweaking ‘Margaret Okudo’ and ‘Owegi Owandho’ respectively: Jesse flipping 80s drum machine hits, heavily dubbed vocals and FX on the former to forge a delightfully loose-fitting, percussive groove; whilst Skinner transforms Joseph Nyamungu’s virtuoso nyatiti/vocal solo into a gloriously skittery freeform bass jam.

Earning stripes in music working for Honest Jon's Records, Sound Signature, Wildheart Recordings and Sounds Familiar, Ruby Savage also known to DJ as Kwasiba Savage is currently label manager at Brownswood. She regularly presents on Worldwide FM as well as co-hosts monthly NTS Radio show and club night ‘In Flames’ which explores the distinctive and infinitely varied grooves of post-punk music. Grounded in the roots of rhythm, Ruby passionately shares her love for the dance through genre-defying DJ sets.
