Counting Worms

a poem i attempted to write from the perspective of my mother, who passed away ultimately due to her depression and alcoholism, which somehow got her on methadone to treat her alcoholism (somehow thats supposed to work???)
anyway she overdosed when i was 17 back in 2011... 
she worked really hard to compartmentalize her friendships and her lovers/sex life, work life, and her responsibilities to myself and my siblings as our mother.

my whole childhood and adolescent years was full of therapy sessions (she and i would sit up and talk) and watching her base her own sense of self worth on what men thought of her... instead of thinking that she was enough and our family of 5 was not perfect, but overall still just fine as it was, she was in constant search of a mate...

when she passed, it was clear that nobody knew this side of her, so i felt obligated to share it
