I wrote this song in the late 80's before I had heard Pete Seeger's 'Turn Turn Turn' made famous by The Byrds. It is a powerful text that poetically embraces the contradictions living in this world of time and space entails. This version, featured on *The Forgotten Song* is beautifully enhanced by Rickard Åström on piano. 
 Bruce Cassidy of Blood Sweat and Tears helped with the original arrangement of the song and contributed his soaring sounds on vocoder, on the original recording *Untimely* www.http://shifty.bigcartel.com/

03 To Everything There Is A Season

'Hirut Song' is a tribute to my favourite Ethiopian Cafe "Hirut", located in the Danforth East community of Toronto. In the Ethiopian jazz tradition, a selected five note theme provides the repeating "Hirut motif", while the deep and persistent bass grooves changes tonality. A subtle thumbed fender jazz bass part is inspired by the great bassist Marcus Miller.

This Euro-ambient jazz is a blend of influences, reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin's cinematic music and Clause Ogerman's rich orchestral sound scape, placing 'Hirut Song' in the genre of cinematic ambient jazz, inviting a version in 5.1 surround sound.

Behringer Neutron, Pitch CV to OSC 1+2 jack, Breath CV to filter FREQ MOD jack, output from VCA jack to external reverb. Oscillator sync patch w. VCA bias to max (no gate).

Section 2:

Growling intervals (audio rate modulation of breath). Pitch CV to Doepfer A-110-1 Standard VCO, Breath CV via MA CVP (for some optional slew to soften attacks) to MA DTA (VCA) and Doepfer A-106-5 SEM filter. (Classic EVI sawtooth horn sound). 

Section 3:

PneuBite portamento demo. Voice here is just a Fonitronic VCO Maximus (CEM3340) and a Doepfer A-106-6 XP VCF, then directly out to reverb. (Sawtooth horn patch.)

Section 4:

Misc horn snippets. Voices from sections 2 & 3.
