The plot revolves around Miguel Gonzalez, a 12-year-old boy, who accidentally finds himself in the Land of the Dead. In this realm, he embarks on a quest to seek assistance from his deceased great-great-grandfather, a musician, to reunite with his living family and overturn their ancestral prohibition on music.
"Remember Me" plays a significant role in various parts of the film. Introduced in a mariachi rendition, the song serves as Ernesto's (Miguels ancester) entreaty to his fans, urging them to keep him in their thoughts during his tours elsewhere. Subsequently, it transforms into a lullaby sung by Ernesto to his daughter Coco, revealing that its intention was solely for her ears, not the worlds. This intimate tune resurfaces as a nostalgic melody linking an older Coco to her earlier years and facilitating a reuinion between Miguel and his great-grandmother.
