Im ersten Band des Kapitals hat Karl Marx den Produktionsprozess des Kapitals dargelegt. In dem viel weniger gelesenen Band II geht es um den Zirkulationsprozess des Kapitals. Das Kapital ist in einer kreislaufförmigen Metamorphose: Geldkapital wird vom Kapitaleigentümer in Ware umgetauscht, die ihm wiederum als Produktionsmittel dient. Die Produktionsmittel wiederum dienen zur Herstellung der Ware, und die Ware wird ihrerseits wieder zu Geld, wenn sie verkauft wird, sodass der Kreislauf von vorne beginnt. Am Ende dieses Kreislaufs, der an jedem Punkt Anfang und Ende ist und den der Kapitaleigentümer immer weiter fortsetzt, bekommt er mehr Geld und mehr Ware, als er vorher in den Kreislauf hineingegeben hat – es entsteht ein Mehrwert.

Allerdings kommt es in diesen Metamorphosen immer wieder zu Stockungen: Etwa, wenn der Kapitaleigentümer nicht genug Rohstoffe oder Arbeitskräfte findet, wenn es Streik gibt oder wenn die Waren an Wert verlieren oder es nicht genug Abnehmer gibt. Das Geld bleibt dann «unproduktiv», was zur Schatzbildung führt. Das Krisenhafte gehört zur Durchschnittsbewegung dieser Kreisläufe. Ohne explizit eine krisentheoretische Überlegung zu machen, wird das inhärent Krisenhafte des Kapitalismus hier zumindest angedeutet.

Im zweiten Teil des Buchs legt Marx den Unterschied zwischen fixem und zirkulierendem Kapital dar, im dritten Teil geht es um die Reproduktion und Zirkulation des gesellschaftlichen Gesamtkapitals. Auch in diesen Kreisläufen gibt es Stockungen und Krisen.
