In collaboration with Sadaa Sound Syndicate, we're honoured to present Sawt Syria: an exploration of club & underground music culture in Syria and its exilic diaspora in Europe. Captured in the summer of 2022, this two-part project showcases, for the first time ever, the most compelling Syrian DJs & producers of contemporary culture, shaabi sounds & rap.

The second segment – 'Exile (Europe)', shot between Amsterdam & Berlin – presents a 7-hour broadcast with 14 artists, followed by a video-essay in which they reflect on their changing artistic practices as they navigate their diasporic realities & make sense out of their experience away from home. 

"Sawt Syria {'sawt' meaning sound} is a meditation on the Syrian condition forged in over a decade of still ongoing war and dispersion, of the abjection and joy that shape that condition and the place of music in reckoning and striving for life. It was conceived & produced by Syrians for Syrians with editorial help from Sadaa Sound Syndicate – a cross-border group of self-organized Syrians who are attuned to the agential possibilities of sound. Since its inception, this project has been difficult to put out into a world where genocide is ongoing in Palestine and where turmoil persists in Syria and the region. Here are his notes: This mix is named after Café Malakoff of the Casbah of Algiers which was considered the prime meeting venue for the most prominent Chaabi artists of 20th century Algeria. In fact, in its heyday it was owned by the most influential Chaabi master of his time, the legendary Hadj Mohammed El Anka, who was nicknamed "The Cardinal" (of Algerian Chaabi).

The mix features several legendary Algerian Chaabi artists including Hadj Mohammed El Anka, Dahmane El Harrachi, Boudjemaa El Ankis (whose picture appears on the artwork of this mix), El Hachemi Guerouabi, Abdelkader Chaou, Amar Ezzahi and Amar Laachab.

Another legendary Algerian Chaabi artist/songwriter/composer who should certainly be mentioned in this mix's notes is Mahboub Bati, the man who wrote and composed some of the biggest hits of the names mentioned above (with the exception of El Anka and Dahmane), many of which are featured in this mix; undoubtedly the leading moderniser of Algerian Chaabi in the second half of the 20th century.

All tracks were recorded from vinyl and cleaned up digitally to improve the poor mastering and/or pressing quality of some of the records; a time consuming task that was completely worth the effort given how great I think those tracks are.
