A decade-plus on the road, near-constant musical output, and shifting creative priorities caused the revered Austin duo, comprised of multi-instrumentalists Rob Lowe and Michael Muller, to soberly assess the band’s future. What, in the form of Balmorhea, was there left to say? And did they have the energy to say it? 
 
Stranger, the group’s maximalist, genre-leaping full-length from 2012, had already seemed to trace the group’s farthest bounds. And, over the years, they’d worked with a roving cast of accomplished string and rhythm players to craft a glassy-eyed, sage-brushed, instrumental Americana that, while celebrated in The New Yorker, Pitchfork and The Atlantic, among myriad other press, and attracting the film, ad, and television worlds risked pigeonholing them for good. 

As they had in the beginning, in 2006, Muller and Lowe worked simply and with restraint, letting intuition guide them as they molded the 10 elegant, spacious gestures that comprise Clear Language.  A relaxed, clear-eyed sense of reflection flows gracefully through the album as these two old friends transmit unfettered meaning through simple sonic gestures that resonate with the cosmos as much as they echo the pulse of a human heart.

This chamber work by composer and pianist Malek Jandali (http://MalekJandali.com) is inspired by several forgotten Syrian folk themes that have been integrated into the Western classical form of a piano quintet. The final result is a unique harmony and dialouge for unity and humanity in attempt to preserve the beauty of the rich culture of Syria. The is a live recording of the World Premiere by Apollo Chamber Players on October 15, 2016 at the Midtown Arts and Theater in Houston. 

Since its inception, music has become a cultural phenomenon. It is something people relate to on emotional, instinctive, intellectual, and many other levels. It has a ected me greatly as well and instilled in me a desire to unite the primal with the contemporary and to create music that tugs at the heart and mind. Thus the birth of this piano quintet, which is based on ancient Syrian themes from the city of Aleppo.

I have always felt that music eloquently expresses the inherent connection between the past, present and future. Today, I feel that music has become solely a means of entertainment rather than a vessel for sharing art and championing human values and rights. As the oldest city in the world, Aleppo is in ruins and ancient cities of Damascus, Hama and my hometown Homs are being destroyed, music is the only tool I have to rescue what is left of our heritage and bring a glimmer of hope to the eyes of the children and the survivors of our present-day holocaust.

As a musician with a mission, it is my duty to preserve and present the rich heritage of my beloved homeland, at the moment that humanity is witnessing the eradication of the cradle of civilization. It is my hope that integrating ancient melodies from beautiful Syria and the Silk Road into my symphonic works will create music that serves as a humanizing force, one which is common to all. My music is dedicated to you, the listener. May you find harmony and peace!

Malek Jandali | Piano Quintet No. 1 Aleppo | Allegro Molto Energico | Movement I

Commissioned, recorded and premiered by the Apollo Chamber Players on February 4, 2017 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

String Quartet No. 1 in E Flat Major by Malek Jandali (http://MalekJandali.com) consists of six short movements that integrate Syrian folk melodies into a classical Western string quartet. Most of the thematic material is derived from the rich musical heritage of ancient Aleppo. Each of the six movements represents a traditional melody colored with unique harmonies and interesting rhythmic patterns. This unique combination is introducing a new vocabulary into the Western chamber music literature while preserving the beauty of the cultural identity of Syria.  

A solemn introduction, Moderato, transports us to ancient Syria and the rich musical heritage of Aleppo. The next Moderato is also based on a folk melody, although it possesses unexpected chromatic elements. The third movement is marked Vivo and consists of a traditional Syrian melody, which undergoes several variations with counterpoint. By contrast, the following Andantino in 5/8 is technically a little gem, with personality and grace in the melody. The dreamy slow movement, an Adagio, immediately creates a mood characterized by a melody in 5/4 (simplified from the original 10/8) and rich harmonic invention, clearly inspired by Jandali’s Syrian heritage. 

The impetuously energetic finale rounds off the work with the sounds of authentic Arabic maqams (modes), which demonstrates the extent of Jandali’s technical progress in writing for chamber music and his skills to fuse Syrian melodies in Western classical forms. This work was written in the summer of 2016 in New York City, at the time when Aleppo was being bombed and destroyed. The World Premiere was performed by the Apollo Chamber Players at Carnegie Hall on February 4, 2017.

Bruno is an Argentine pianist, producer, and classically trained composer based in Barcelona who writes for strings, piano, and electronics. 
In 1998 he started as a producer for ad21, a personal label that has released the majority of his albums. Although he also collaborated on several projects with the labels 7K!, Moderna Records, Thesis, 1631 Recordings [Universal/Decca], El Muelle Records, and Dronarivm, among others. In 2024, Bruno, as a co-owner, embarked on a new chapter by opening ad21's doors to pianists from around the world.
His Piano Textures series, started in 2007, is one of Sanfilippo’s most representative set of recordings, but he has also gained wider recognition in modern music – one of his piano compositions formed the basis for rapper Drake’s seminal hit, ‘Started From The Bottom’.
In addition to recordings available on streaming platforms, Sanfilippo has a series of solo and collaborative albums that are available exclusively through Bandcamp, some of which were released by American labels in physical format between 2008 and 2012.
Sanfilippo regularly performs at various live and multimedia events, and at festivals all over the world. He presents 'Refugio de Luz' in June 2025. In this EP, he continues his exploration of neoclassical music, offering compositions that blend emotional depth with elegant simplicity. Under the name Onix, he focuses on blending contemporary electronic atmospheres with intimate traditional orchestration.
